Solo Idols Could Take the Spotlight Next : What Exactly Does Being a Solo Idol Entail?

Ever since the debut of idol groups like Perfume and AKB48 which have taken Japan by storm in recent years, the idol group scene has transformer into a distinct cultural pillar in Japan, rather than just a passing fad. As a result of this however, solo idols have been overlooked because of being pushed to sidelines by big idol groups.Amongst these solo idols, there are some very talented artists that have plenty to offer fans of all sorts of music genres.
00年代後半、PerfumeやAKB48のブレイクから始まったライブ系のアイドルブームは、もはやブームではなく一つのカルチャーとして定着するほどに大きな広がりを見せているが、これはあくまでグループアイドルのムーブメントであって、ソロのアイドルはその盛り上がりの外側にいた。ただ、女性アイドルがこれだけ盛り上がりを見せる中で、ソロで活動するアイドルの中にも、おもしろいタレントが育ってきている。

Many would agree that the leading solo artist who has recently been receiving a lot of attention, would be Ayami Muto. Ayami Muto was the first student president of Sakura Gakuin, and after graduating and receiving 2 years of training, she got her second chance at the entertainment world. Ayami’s first chance at making her mark in the entertainment world was limited, leaving her talents buried in nothing but mystery. However, after her appearance on Asahi television’s ‘LoGiRL‘, Ayami’s Twitter, Instagram and other various social media sites became flooded with support, and led her fame. Ayami has gained so much popularity that her concert ‘Birthday One Man’ at Shibuya Public hall on April 28th, was completely sold out.
いま注目されるソロアイドルの筆頭といえるのが武藤彩未だろう。さくら学院の初代生徒会長である彼女は、卒業後およそ２年間に渡るトレーニングの期間をおいて、ソロのアイドルとして再スタートをきった。活動当初は露出の機会も限られ、神秘的なイメージをまとっていたが、テレビ朝日系「LoGiRL」での番組配信、TwitterやInstagramなどのソーシャルメディアを通して、徐々に本人のキャラクターも広く知られるようになり、4/29に行われたバースデーワンマンでは渋谷公会堂をソールドアウトさせるほどの人気を誇っている。

At another event known as the ‘Hello Project’, we saw the pure talents of other unique artists that have gained fame overseas (primarily in South America). Some of these well-known idols include You Kikkawa, who switched over from variety shows into the music scene, old-school character and intelligent artist Yufu Terashima, who’s fanbase has been booming in recent times, and Hokkaido-born diva Rinne Yoshida, who has become overwhelmingly well-known in her genre.
ほかにも、ハロー！プロジェクトの出身で、確かな実力を持ち、個性的なキャラクターで海外進出（主に南米）も積極的に行っている吉川友、色物系のアイドルグループからソロに転向し、古風で正統派なキャラクターと、インテリジェンスを感じさせられる立ち居振る舞いでファンを増やしている寺嶋由芙、北海道発の歌姫として、大人を手玉に取るようなキャラクターで圧倒的な大物感を漂わせている吉田凛音など、注目のソロアイドルは確実に育ってきている。

The present day idol movement centres around big idol groups because of their various dance formations, ability to adhere to the needs of fans through their various personalities and give physical connection to their fans through events such as hand-shake events, whereas solo artists are generally unable to fulfil such demands.
現在のアイドルムーブメントはグープアイドルが主体なので、ステージ上での人数を生かしたフォーメーションダンス、ファンの様々なニーズに対応できる多様な個性を持ったメンバー、握手会などの接触イベントで枚数を積み重ねる売上の立て方など、グループアイドルが注目を集めるようになった理由となる諸要素が、ソロのアイドルには当てはまらない。

Solo idols aren’t however, without their perks. Solo idols do need to stand on stage, sing, MC and perform all other performance related activities on their own, so a heavy responsibility to perform highly on all levels rests on their shoulders. Amongst this challenging atmosphere, solo idols must be drilled to perform their very best. In exchange for these heavy responsibilities, by standing onstage alone, solo artists have the opportunity to gain the complete, undivided attention of the entire audience, and travelling overseas to perform concerts is much easier for them as a result of lower voyage costs. As you can see, being a solo idol isn’t without its merits.
そういったメリットがない一方、ソロのアイドルは、ステージに立てば歌もＭＣも１人で全てをこなさなければいけないので、個のタレントとしての総合的な能力の高さが求められるし、強い責任感も必要とされる。難しい環境の中でやっている分、アイドルとしては、グループアイドルの中の１人１人以上に鍛えられている。責任も重い分、ステージに立てば、お客さんが自分一人を見てくれるし、渡航費の関係で海外に遠征しやすいなど、ソロにはソロのメリットもある。

Group idols that have made a break into the entertainment world, have had groups such as ‘Momoiro Clover Z who followed Perfume and AKB48’s footsteps, making great sales for themselves. If a solo idol was able to establish their own strategy, the idol world might be able to change, with that idol becoming a symbol for all other solo idols and a sign that such dreams could become a reality.
グループアイドルが今のようにブレイクした背景には、PefeumeやAKBが大きくブレイクして、さらにももいろクローバーＺがそれに続き、売り出し方の方法論が確立した面が大きい。だとすれば、ソロのアイドルからも誰か一人飛び抜けた存在が出てくれば状況は変わるだろうし、そうしたソロアイドルなりの売り出し方の方法論を最初に見つけ出したアイドルが、シーンを象徴する存在になっていくのだろう。
