October was a big month for music releases in Japan, many of them representing major changes for some of the groups that caught our attention. Of course, the biggest event of all, Halloween was even bigger in Tokyo than the previous year, shutting down Shibuya’s world famous scramble intersection for 4 nights in a row (See the pictures from just one of the nights here!)

Here are the honorable mentions for October 2016.

lyrical school“Magic Hour” (release date: October 5)

Happiness“Ordinary Girls” (release date: October 12)

Minami Takahashi“Kagami yo Kagami” (release date: October 12)

Maneki Kecha“Time Machine” (release date: October 18)

MAY’S featuring predia“Romance wa After Work” (release date: October 26)

PassCode“MISS UNLIMITED” (release date: October 26)

Sayaka Yamamoto“Yuki Koi” (release date: October 26)

Here are 8 of our favorite MVs for songs released in October of 2016 listed in chronological order according to their release date.

BiSH – “Hontou Honki” (release date: October 5)

The MV for “Hontou Honki” has BiSH running wild in the streets of Shibuya all night long and finding their newest member Ayuni D (who also wrote the lyrics for the song) as the sun begins to rise. BiSH’s major label status is evident with the polished MV for “Orchestra”, it lacked some of the mischievousness of their previous works, while giving considerable screen time to the story at the expense of the members. “Hontou Honki” is chaotic and wild, carrying on the spirit of the group they are trying to surpass in BiS. It’s probably no coincidence that the resurrected BiS shot the MV for their new song “Change the World” in Shibuya as well.

ShuuKaRen – “UNIVERSE” (release date: October 5)

The Fujii sisters Shuuka (Flower) and Karen (Happiness) step out into the night like a pair of debutantes and tear up the dance floor with a barrage of smooth dance moves. Let’s hope that ShuuKaRen is not just a limited time unit and is just getting started because they have definitely left fans wanting to see and hear more! As the commercial song for the Solo2 line of wireless headphones from popular fashion audio accessory brand Beats by Dr.Dre, we hope it doesn’t end up disappearing from the Internet like so many other promotional songs have before.

UPUPGIRLS (KARI) – “Bare Bare I LOVE YOU (∞ Remix)” (release date: October 11)

UPUPGIRLS (KARI) packed a lot into their 21st single as they prepare to make history as the 1st independent idol group to perform at the legendary Nippon Budokan on November 8, 2016. Along with the extremely random “!!!!!!!!” (“!!!!!!!!” is pronounced “Ban Ban Ban”) and quirky retro “Ran Ran Ran”, there was also the emotional “Kimi toiu Kasetsu” and live video for “YOLO”. However, those all pale in comparison to the insanity that is “Bare Bare I LOVE YOU (∞ Remix)”! Using the anime trope of schoolgirls bumping into their fated love while running late for school with a slice of toast in their mouth, UPUPGIRLS (KARI) push things to the extreme for an unforgettable MV!

Houkago Princess – “Himitsu no Tiara to Gelato” (release date: October 12)

Houkago Princess pay tribute to Hollywood legend and style icon Audrey Hepburn as Princess Anne in the classic film “Roman Holiday”. This was also the first single for Marina Nagasawa, Sasara Sekine, and Mayumi Kojima as full-fledged members after their promotions were announced at Tokyo Idol Festival 2016. The video of the performance from their “LIVE〜PRINCESS STORY〜” at Zepp Diver City on September 22nd is also worth watching since it shows their quick-change during the middle of the song!

ANGERME – “Ai no Tame Kyou made Shinka Shitekita Ningen Ai no Tame Subete Taika Shitekita Ningen” (release date: October 19)

In addition to having one of the longest song titles for the month of October, “Ai no Tame Kyou made Shinka Shitekita Ningen Ai no Tame Subete Taika Shitekita Ningen” introduced the world to ANGERME’s newest member Momona Kasahara who marches out front and center to deliver the opening lines. As a group with consistently catchy songs, precision choreography, quality outfits, and giving equal time to all of the members, it should be no surprise why ANGERME is a constant fixture in our monthly lists. As lovely as “Wasurete Ageru” and “Umaku Ienai” were, it’s hard to beat the triumphant debut of a new member.

Namie Amuro – “Fighter” (release date: October 19)

It’s Namie Amuro and the Shinigami from Death Note. Isn’t that enough of a reason?

Juice=Juice – “KEEP ON Joushou Shikou!!” (release date: October 26)

Just picking one song from Juice=Juice’s new single was difficult as all 3 songs were full of the fighting spirit that has kept them on the path to their first Nippon Budokan one-man live on November 7, 2016. While “Dream Road~Kokoro ga Odoridashiteru~” was visually impressive and might even be considered the theme song of their landmark performance and “Ashita yarou wa Bakayarou” is incredibly fun (When isn’t being able to shout “bakayarou” not fun?), “KEEP ON Joushou Shikou!!” is probably the strongest of the 3. It has everything: infectious disco, dance moves inspired by the legendary “King of Pop” Michael Jackson, flashing lights, cowbell, and shiny outfits! Expect this to be a song that heats up the Budokan and venues for years to come!

Seiko Omori – “POSITIVE STRESS” (release date: October 26)

Anyone who thinks parenthood slows people down must not know Seiko Omori since it seems like she’s kept up her prolific pace while balancing motherhood. Set in a fantasy world and the gritty streets of Shibuya, “POSITIVE STRESS” is a wild trip through the looking glass. On top of that, there was also her MV for “Hikokuminteki Hero” from the same single as well as her providing music/lyrics for some of the other songs on this list.

November is here and the leaves are slowly starting to change color and it seems like as soon as Halloween was over, the Christmas decorations were put up all over Tokyo already! It’s just a matter of time before the Christmas/winter songs start appearing! If you think there was anyone else we might have missed left us know!
