Mayu Watanabe received a late birthday present when preliminary results for AKB48’s 45th Single Senbatsu Election were announced on June 1, 2016 at the AKB48 Theater. Watanabe, who’s birthday celebration live (her actual birthday is March 26) was held that day was present for the announcement of the rankings which aired live to the other theaters, where members and fans alike held their breath to find out the results.

The preliminary results were also distributed as breaking news in Akihabara, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Shinbashi and other parts of Tokyo. Voting for AKB48’s 45th Single Senbatsu Election started on May 31, 2016, the “flying get” day for “Tsubasa wa Iranai”.

With the ranking announcement, it was also unveiled that the group who wins the most seats, in other words, the “majority party”, will get some special rewards in the form of a) a new setlist that starts on October 30, 2016; b) a “Thank you” festival for fans to attend; c) LINE stamps. The top 16 members (“Senbatsu”), in addition to being in the A-side track, will also be singing the theme song for “Toki wo Kakeru Shojo”, a new drama that starts in July on Nippon TV. The 45th single that is scheduled to release in August will be a double A-side single.

In other news, “Tsubasa wa Iranai”, AKB48’s 44th single that went on sale on June 1, 2016, sold 2.3 million copies on the first day, easily grabbing the #1 spot on the Oricon charts.

Comments from Mayu Watanabe (1st place):

I was very surprised to hear that I ranked 1st in the prelims and too shocked at first, but I am really happy. It’s still the prelims, but I’m very thankful because my fans are working hard. Sasshi is not far behind, but I would like to win the election!

Last year I was not able to win 1st place again and ranked 3rd, which was frustrating. This year I would like to come back and win again. I believe my fans are as pumped up as I am.
I am only aiming for 1st! I will do my best!

Comments from Jurina Matsui (3rd place):

Thank you, everyone. I was anxious to hear the results and I’m glad I ranked 3rd. I would like to, with the help of my fans, get to 1st place, so please keep supporting me.

I’m also very happy that many SKE members ranked, but I think there is plenty of room to go further. There’s still time until the end, so it would be great to carry the joy today with me all the way to the final event.

Dear fans, please lend your strength to SKE48 and keep supporting us.

Comments from Sayaka Yamamoto (4th place):

Frankly, I am really happy about the results because this is the highest I’ve ever ranked in the prelims. I got about 10,000 more votes than in the prelims last year, and it’s only been a day! I am incredibly grateful. But since I declared that I want to be at the top, it is of course a little frustrating and I don’t want it to end like this. I would like to keep going. Thank you for your support.

Comments from Haruka Kodama (8th place):

26 HKT48 members ranked in the prelims! I’m very happy that over half of the members were called. As for me, I ranked 8th. I am very thankful for the support.
Last year I ranked 17th at the end, and this year I would like to go higher and finally climb the senbatsu wall.

Comments from Rie Kitahara (50th place):

This year’s election will be held in Niigata, so honestly, I am not very satisfied with the results. Yukirin (Kashiwagi), Yuka-chan (Ogino), Rika-chan (Nakai) and I, along with all the members whose names were not called, are all aiming for higher ranks than the prelims. Since it will be held in Niigata, we want to make it meaningful. Please keep supporting us.

An overseas 46/48 fan who used to translate under the name of bilingual48. Can also be found at Nogizaka46 handshakes once every 2-3 months near Karin Ito’s lane – just look for the guy with purple sunglasses. Also, apparently I look like Akimoto-sensei, especially when wearing a suit.
