Ehime girls’ rock unit Hime Kyun Fruit Can have collaborated with their local mascot Barysan to form “Barykyun” and have released the MV for the new unit’s single “Koi no BRKN” (release date: February 11).
In what might be one of the cutest Hime Kyun Fruit Can songs in recent memory, the members play an 8-bit video game where they travel through different worlds to save the captured Barysan. Mai Okamoto even blows on the cartridge before putting it in, a habit familiar to anyone who owned one of those old Nintendo consoles.
Barysan is a mascot for the town of Imabari in Ehime prefecture. He is a giant chicken because the town is famous for yakitori (grilled chicken) which is his favorite food. Yes, we realize that is cannibalism but it’s okay because he’s a mascot? The crown on his head represents the Kurushima-Kaikyo bridge. The towel around his waist and the ship that he carries represent the local maritime and cotton processing industries (Imbari produces more than half of the towels in Japan and even has a towel museum). Barysan won the “Yurukyara Grand Prix” (a competition for mascots from all over Japan) in 2012.
