No Idol Festival? There’s So Many Events That You Can Plan Your Own in Shibuya This Weekend!

Summertime in Japan is when temperatures soar and all the big events happen! August started off with Tokyo Idol Festival 2015 (August 1-2) as over 150 performers and more than 51,000 fans gathered in Odaiba. Right after that there was idol nation (August 3), GIRLS’FACTORY 15 (August 3-4), and Idol Koushien’s 3-day event at Akasaka Blitz and Shin-Kiba Studio Coast (August 8-10), just to name a few others. Even though the giant festivals are mostly finished for now, that doesn’t mean that you need to stop and rest up until @JAM EXPO! On the weekend of August 15-16, there are a ton of events happening in Shibuya so you can plan your own idol event and not have to travel someplace far away like Ibaraki (Rock in Japan), or Chiba (Summer Sonic)!

For those of you wanting to get the weekend started early, a cleanup event organized by solo idol Ichigo Rinahamu (ex-BiS, ex-Akishibu project) and NPO Green Bird will be taking place in Shibuya, starting at the famous Hachiko statue at 10:30am. This is part of a promotion for Ichigo Rinahamu’s new single “Poi Sute, Dame, Dame!” which will go on sale August 16th. The song is a response to accusations of her littering, which arose after someone took pictures of her on the train sitting near an empty Starbucks cup last winter. Here’s a short preview of the 4 songs included on the single. It’s a must have for any fans of “yume kawaii”!
Starting around lunch time are 4 tai-ban events full of up and coming idol groups.

The most interesting event for Sunday has to be BiSH‘s hide and seek cheki event “CHEKi BiSH IF YOU CAN??” that will be taking place in the middle of Shibuya! All you need is a BiSH “IDOL” T-shirt and a pair of sunglasses! If you manage to catch one of the members, you can get a free 2-shot cheki with them. The event runs from 1:00pm to 5:00pm with a short 30 minute break from 2:30pm to 3:00pm. When you find them, you must yell “Catch BiSH!!” but you are encouraged to refrain from running or causing trouble to passersby. This might be difficult since the map includes some of the most crowded areas of Shibuya.
Hints on the locations of the members during the game will be updated in real time via the Twitter account @CHEKiBiSH. You can take a cheki with each member once if you catch them and management has planned for about 1,000 chekis so don’t wait! Could this also be a chance to meet new members? If you miss this event, there is also the BiSH concert at Zepp Tokyo on August 26th which will be free for anyone with a Tokyo Idol Festival 2015 2nd day or 2-day wristband since their performances were cancelled.
A bunch of tai-ban events start from midmorning on Sunday and many of them may continue into the early evening. Several of the performers at the Live Plus events overlap so unless you are a super hardcore underground idol fan and want to follow your oshi wherever she goes, you probably don’t need to go to both. If you are unsure of what “good idol music” sounds like, there is an appropriately titled event for you at RUIDO K2!

If you wake up later or are looking for a change of scenery around the middle of the day or afternoon, a few smaller events with less underground performers are available. Kagai Jugyou translates to “extracurricular lesson” which begs the question, why isn’t FYT one of the performers?
