On July 1st and 2nd, Momoiro Clover Z, an idol group known for their anime song for “Dragon Ball”, “Sailor Moon” and “Pokemon”, appeared on Anime Expo 2015 in Los Angeles. They had various events such as special live performance as the main act at Microsoft Theater, meet and greets with overseas fans and felt a good response at their first performance in U.S. After the performance it was announced that 4,351 people went to see their performance.
Anime Expo is the largest North American anime convention held in Los Angeles, California, and Momoiro Clover Z was invited as a special live guest this year. The idol group had participated in Japan Expo at Paris in 2012, but since then they had no chance to perform their tracks in front of their foreign fans although they corroborated with world-class musicians and released a lot of tracks which collaborates with Japanese Pop Anime. This visit was a kind of their show in front of foreign fans how much their performance had advanced in this three years.
On Day of Anime Expo (1st July), all the members of Momoiro Clover Z appeared in front of ticket counter of Anime Expo surprisingly, and they started handing leaflets out for their concert on the next day. About 100 Mononofus from Japan also came to U.S. for the Momoclo’s first U.S. concert, and they helped promotion of the concert to the ticket line. If they succeeded in promotion, they could take 7-shots photo with the members!
On night before the live performance, a pre-event was held for U.S. fans to learn how to enjoy Momoclo live. Here too, the members appeared as the special surprise guest. Fans of Momoclo and the members watched live DVD together, and members taught “Ota-gei”, fans’ idiosyncratic body move and calling out during live. At the end of the event hastily Meet & Greet was set, and members saw the fans off. Fans in U.S. who would experience Momoclo’s live on the next day for the first time must have expressed mounting expectations.
Of course the highlight of their first U.S. challenge was a live performance as the main act at Microsoft Theater on 2nd July. They made a special track list only for today: mix of anime songs and their front-lines. After the introduction of them by the members of KISS, the live started with a sudden Heart Sutra expressing the attitude to the live. It was a specially developed staging for the day. Their usual OVERTURE started after that, and the fans made response with calls, creating hot atmosphere for their appearance. Resounding the famous line “Moon Prism Power, Makeup!!” the member appeared with a masterpiece from Sailor Moon: Moon Light Densetsu. They continually performed a lot of famous Anime tracks from Gundam Seed, Mouretsu Pirates, Sailor Moon and Pokemon, inserting Momoclo tracks such as : Nippon Egao Hyakkei, Yume no Ukiyo ni Ssaitemina (the corroboration track with KISS), or Chai Maxx. They also sang a special track for the day: The Pledge of “Z”, English version of “Z no Chikai” (the theme tune for the movie “Dragon Ball Z Resurrection F”). The lyrics was translated in English more energetically, and it matches the lively dance for the track like a battle of Z worriers against Freeza. The peak of the live came with “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” in the Encore section. Everyone knew the track, and the whole Microsoft Theater sang in chorus with the members. After that, they finished up their live with their representative: Ikuze! Kaitou Syoujyo.
Most of the Japanese fans who attended this event said: “Of course I enjoyed this trip. For example I could talk with my “Oshi” for the first time in this 3 or 4 years. It was so nice. But above all, their live performance was very cool. I’m glad I could attend the live.” Their dance was sharp and quick, and the commanding performance even in front of foreign fans who saw Momoclo for the first time in real might make the impression. From the eyes from Japanese fans, they must leave traces on U.S. anime fans community.
