A “summer festival” event was held on the 8th at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, with a total of 245 AKB48 group members participating. It was simultaneously held as a national meet-and-greet handshake event for the AKB48 single “Labrador Retriever”. Ever since the incident in May when two members were attacked at one such handshake event, these sessions had been held with strict security in place, while exploring new and different means of contact with fans. Members involved in these new experiments were met with positive feedback, and the possibility arose for these activities to become a regular part of the events.

Elevated platforms for the Bon Festival dance, yo-yo fishing and shooting games, and merchandise stands stood in rows inside the festival grounds. Here and there in the uniformly festival-themed arena, AKB members could be seen making brief guerrilla-style appearances. They played games with fans, talked with them on can-and-string telephones, and even gave out autographs. Yuki Kashiwagi, Mayu Watanabe, and others gave solo performances onstage backed by live bands, giving the event a unique special feel. After their live sets, they immediately joined the festivities of the handshake event, walking around the crowded venue and mingling with fans, which was a particularly impressive sight.
