Anime Japan 2016 Event Report Vol.1 : Natsume Yuujinchou Talk Event Welcoming Hiroshi Kamiya and Kazuhiko Inoue

“I will return your name.” You might be familiar with this phrase if you have watched Natsume Yuujinchou (Natsume’s Book of Friends). From Yuki Midorikawa’s manga, “Natsume Yuujinchou”, its anime has been broadcasted in Japan for four times in the past. The manga even continues today showing an unstopping popularity by even readers oversea.
Natsume Takashi, 17 years old high school student, can see Youkai, a Japanese ghost-like apparition, against his will starting from his young days. One day, he notices the existence of his grandmother, Reiko’s yuujinchou; a book of friends, which contains the name of youkai who Reiko has brought under her control. Madara, also known as Nyanko Sensei, appears in front of Natsume to give his yuujinchou to him, but instead Natsume promises to give the listed names back to where it belongs to, which is to the youkai. The heartwarming story, the good combination of Natsume and Nyanko Sensei, and more attractions of this work led to its high value.
Finally, this autumn, the on air of Natsume Yujinchou 5th season was announced to the fans three days before the event. Though, several events related to the work was opened for the fans before now, four years have passed since the on air of 4th season, and fans reacted to this exciting news on the SNS. Natsume Yuujinchou Talk event on March 26th (Sat) was the first event after the announce of the new season. We heard how the two main casts are ready for it, and their feeling of acting their beloved characters for almost eight years and so on.
Natsume Yuujinchou Talk Event was at the GREEN STAGE which fits perfectly with the anime’s atmosphere. First, the new teaser of Natsume Yuujinchou 5th season was shown to the guests on the screen, and Kazuhiko Inoue (voice actor of Nyanko Sensei) bumped into Hiroshi Kamiya (voice actor of Natsume) on purpose, which showed Inoue’s playfulness. Inoue also greeted the fans speaking in a voice of Nyanko Sensei to evoke the mood.
Kamiya commented that this is his first time acting a character for five season long, and also mentioned how his upcoming challenge will be creating Natsume again from four years blank. Inoue told how he was surprise about the 5th season, and how he didn’t feel long about the blank, but instead exciting to act Nyanko Sensei again.
The stage went on reading messages from the past director, author, and new director from the new season. Kamiya and Inoue read out loud instead of them, and reacted that they aren’t worried about the new staffs since they gathered once at the OVA recording. From Oomori director, who took the megaphone in the past Natsume Yuujinchou series, either Kamiya or Inoue got a warning of not drinking too much, and both promised to not drink much and prepare for the 5th season in a healthy condition.
After the messages from the creating staffs, video messages were played on the screen by Kazuma Horie (voice of Kaname Tanuma), Ryouhei Kimura (voice of Satoru Nishinuma), Hisayoshi Suganuma (voice of Atsushi Kitamoto), Akira Ishida (voice of Shuuichi Natori), and Jyunichi Suwabe (voice of Seiji Matoba).
Next, latest Natsume news were announced to the fans. First, Natsume Yuujinchou Series Selection, selected episodes from 1st to 4th season, will be on air on TV TOKYO starting from April 5th. Second, Blu-ray BOX 2 (every episode from 3rd to 4th season and extra bonus features) will be on sale on June 29th. For those who bought this box will get a lottery ticket for the advanced screening of the 5th season episode 1.
At the end of the event, staffs who has affected with the Natsume Yuujinchou series selected the most memorable scenes to share with Kamiya, Inoue, and the fans. In the scene where Nyanko Sensei turns into Natsume, Inoue told how it was fun acting Natsume, and repeated the line over and over again. Kamiya also reacted to the first episode in a very nostalgic way, and told Madara version is a very rare scene since he doesn’t appear that much.
Before wrapping up the stage, Kamiya and the fans screamed “happy birthday!” to Inoue who turned 62 this day. Nyanko Sensei 3D birthday cake appeared on the stage, and Inoue thanked Kamiya and the fans.
For the very last, Kamiya told he will do his best to make Natsume in perfect shape as a character by first taking care of his health, and wished the fans to take care their selves as well. Inoue announced in Nyanko Sensei’s voice to the fans to watch the episode selection to recall the memories before the 5th season starts. Both bowed deeply to the fans, and left the stage in a warm applause.
