Over the Rainbow (Bridge): UNIDOL 2014-15 Winter Finals in Odaiba Coming Just in Time for Valentine’s Day

On February 12, 2015, female university students from all over Japan will gather in the shadow of Gundam, at Zepp Diver City Tokyo, to battle for dance supremacy. UNIDOL (a combination of the words university and idol) is an idol copy dance competition open to female university students in Japan. With 47 teams entered in three different preliminary rounds in Kyushuu, Kansai, and Kanto, this is the biggest UNIDOL event so far!
While idols are frequently seen as having a lot of male fans, UNIDOL is a chance for female fans to show their love of idols through dance. It’s a common sight to see students performing at events like school festivals but, UNIDOL allows them to meet up with other groups from schools from all over the country and perform in front of a bigger audience on some of the most famous stages in Japan. In addition to learning and practicing the choreography, many groups make their own outfits and maintain social media accounts to let friends and family know about upcoming performances, just like the idols they admire.
So far, 10 teams have been guaranteed spots in the final event:
Dorukura☆ – Nihon University College of Art
Copia – Meiji University
Tomboys☆ – Toyo University
winK♡ – Kitasato University
SPH mellmuse – Sophia University
Panpii☆*s – Housei University
Ag♡+ – Aoyama Gakuin University
Wasejo Nante Yobanaide – Waseda University
CottonCandy – Kyoto Women’s University
Q-dol – Kyushuu University
Three more teams will advance from a wild card bracket and a fourth team will advanced based on votes placed via a smartphone application called “CircleApp”. Results will be determined by votes cast by audience members and a panel of judges from talent agencies, television stations, and choreographers. Serving as the MCs for the event are Kei’ichi Shizuka from the comedy duo Summit Club and singer You Kikkawa. While Kikkawa will probably sing a few songs just like she did last year, there will also be a “surprise guest” performing as well! The special guest for Summer 2014 was °C-ute and the guest before that was SUPER☆GIRLS.
Former champions SPH mellmuse (Summer 2014) and Copia (Spring 2013) may already be in the finals but, the level of competition has increased with each UNIDOL to the point where it becomes almost impossible to predict who will win.
