Strongest Otaku Unit Shoko-tan♥Dempagumi Flash the Cover Art for Their Collaboration Single “PUNCH LINE!”

Shoko-tan♥Dempagumi (read: Shoko-tan Daisuki Dempagumi), the collaboration group of Shoko Nakagawa and Dempagumi.inc have released the jacket art for the single “PUNCH LINE!” (release date: April 29), the opening theme song of the upcoming late-night anime of the same name.

The lyrics and music for this unprecedented collaboration song are being handled by the legendary Hyadain (Ken’ichi Maeyamada). “PUNCH LINE!” will be released on Nakagawa’s Sony Music Entertainment label. A follow up single by the unit Dempagumi♥Shoko-tan (read: Dempagumi Daisuki Shoko-tan) has already been announced and will be released at a later date by Dempagumi’s Toy’s Factory label.

The theme of the cover photos is “fashionable purikura” and so all 7 members are arranged close to each other just as a group of friends would be when using a puri machine to take a picture. In the picture, their faces have been decorated by face painting by illustrator Ai☆Madonna. The back cover of the CD shows Shoko-tan♥Dempagumi huddled together and photographed from behind using a low angle to reflect the theme of the anime, which has to do with panchira (the Japanese term for “panty-shot”). While there are heart-shaped stickers covering the panchira in the picture above, when you buy the CD, you can remove the stickers! It’s a bit of an understatement to say that Japanese like panchira, especially since there was a week-long exhibition to panchira art held in Tokyo in February.

“PUNCH LINE!” will be released in a first press version (CD & DVD) and regular version (CD). The coupling song is titled “LUCKY DIP” and will be performed by Shoko Nakagawa. The DVD for the first press version included the MV for “PUNCH LINE!” as well as a making of video. There is also an anime version of the single with a panchira shot of the main female character Mikatan Narugino on the cover. That version includes a DVD with a “credit-free” version of the opening animation sequence of the series as well as the MV for “PUNCH LINE!” The coupling song for the anime version is “make a wish ♡” which is also performed by Shoko Nakagawa.

Dempagumi will be a guest performer at Nakagawa’s 2-day 30th birthday concert event “Nakagawa Shoko Chou☆Donyoku Seitansai 30 dao! Zen’in Shuugou” at Maihama Amphitheater so the chances of them performing “PUNCH LINE!” live should be almost certain! Dempagumi and voice actress Pile (most famous for voicing Maki Nishikino from the Love Live! series) will be the guests for the daytime performance on May 4th.
