Experience Japanese School Girls’ Culture! “Puribooth” for Overseas Landed in NY

The first official Puribooth (provided by FuRru Corporation) in New York City opens for business Friday, March 13, at Japan Society, in tandem with the opening of the Society’s eagerly anticipated spring exhibition “Life of Cats: Selections from the Hiraki Ukiyo-e Collection”.
A standard attraction at Japan’s wildly popular arcades and in dizzying Tokyo fashion districts like Shibuya or Harajuku, the Puribooth photo experience is much different than the American style booths found in bars, lounges and shops around Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Here is our Puri introduction video for Puri in Japan.
With the Puribooth, players get four shots, as they do in American booths, but with the help of some high-tech wizardry and super high-quality photo processing, they can manipulate and play with their photo in fun and remarkable ways. Software will automatically change the shape of eyes so that they are wider and smooth skin tones—one of the facets that makes the Puribooth so unique—and players can then draw and write over the picture, decorate with various characters and symbols, and select a background from a variety of presets. Among myriad backgrounds will be several customized for Japan Society events. Players can pose in front of the frolicking felines of the Life of Cats exhibition through its June 7 closing, and movie goers at the JAPAN CUTS film festival in July can put themselves into one of the best new Japanese movies of the year.
Wait-averse New Yorkers will be happy to learn that play time from photo to editing to final print is limited to 5 minutes in total when a line forms, though the edit process can last much longer if there is no line. Less than two minutes after the final edit to the images, players receive a physical copy of the photos with a stickered back. These are also made available to download from a secure website either onto a computer or onto favorite social media platforms. Each play costs $5, and the machine will accept cash and credit and debit cards.
