The winner of the “Otona AKB48 Audition (Adult AKB48 Audition),” sponsored by AKB48 and Ezaki glico brand PAPICO, has been announced. At today’s television commercial shoot for PAPICO on April 17, the winner was brought out and introduced in an interview session surrounded by members of AKB48 and the media.

The “Otona AKB48 Audition” was held as part of a PAPICO campaign to audition a new over-30s member to join the group for a limited time. From over 5000 entries, Mariko Tsukamoto, a 37 year old mother of 2 children, successfully made the cut as the “adult AKB48” member. At today’s press event, before Mrs. Tsukamoto was introduced, Mayu Watanabe was asked what kind of person they were looking for.
She answered, “Since we often travel as a group, I hope we can get someone who’s like a schoolteacher.”
Haruka Shimazaki responded, “someone pretty.”
And finally, it was Mrs. Tsukamoto’s turn to take center stage.
“I felt like crying… it still feels like I’m dreaming.” As she spoke, tears began to well up in her eyes. And then she introduced herself. “Hello everyone. My name is Mariko Tsukamoto, and I have been selected as the adult AKB48 member. I’m 37 years old, and a mother of 2.”

Mrs. Tsukamoto will begin her activities at the same time the PAPICO commercial begins airing, May 14. Until her membership ends on August 31, she will perform with the group at the AKB48 Theater and in concert, and participate in events such as handshake sessions. We’ll be looking forward to seeing how she will perform.
