Wrap Up MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON Festival 2014: A Festival of Japan’s Pop Culture

With the concept of spreading Japan’s pop culture to the world, “MOSHI MOSHI NIPPON Festival 2014” took place on September 28th in the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasiam.
“日本のポップカルチャーを世界へ”というコンセプトのもと「もしもしにっぽんFestival 2014」が9月28日に東京・東京体育館にて開催された。

Aside from the performances by successful artists such as Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Dempgagumi.inc, SUPER☆GIRLS, and popular models participating in fashion shows, there were food stands to give a taste of Japanese festivals, a karaoke contest, booths dedicated to beauty and fashion, and other similar events going on to provide a large variety of things to do for the 15,000 people attending the festival.
きゃりーぱみゅぱみゅやでんぱ組.inc、SUPER☆GiRLSなど国内外で活躍するアーティストによるパフォーマンスの他、人気モデルらによるファッションショー、また日本のお祭り気分を味わうことができる「屋台ブース」や、カラオケコンテスト、美容・ファッション企業の特設ブースなど幅広いコンテンツが用意され、来場者数はのべ1万5千人に及んだ。

Many foreigners took advantage of the campaign which allowed them to enter the event for free. By informing people – whether they are native or foreign – of the event, the project hoped to bring attention to Moshi Moshi Nippon in the future.
当イベントは外国籍の方は入場無料というキャンペーンを行い、多くの外国人が訪れた。まずは観光客の方から「もしもしにっぽん」の存在を知ってもらうことで、将来的に国内外より注目を集めるプロジェクトにしたいという試みだ。

The opening act, TEMPURA KIDZ, livened up the Moshi Moshi Stage (main stage) with their amusing and sharp performance with Dempagumi.inc performing soon after. For many of the foreign visitors, Dempagumi.inc’s intense performance, as well as the passionate “wotagei” (a type of dancing and cheering by Japanese idol fans), surprised them. Many were found taking pictures or videos of the scene. After that, SUPER☆GIRLS, Silent Siren,and May’n appeared, showing a powerful girl-power performance.
メインステージ「もしもしステージ」のトップバッターを務めたのはTEMPURA KIDZ。キレキレの愉快なパフォーマンスで会場を盛り上げた。続いてステージに上ったのアーティストはでんぱ組.inc。でんぱ組.incのライブを初めて観る外国人来場者は、彼女たちのパフォーマンスはもちろんだが、激しいヲタ芸や異様なまでの盛り上がりなどファンたちの熱気に驚き、写真や動画を撮っている姿も見られた。その後SUPER☆GiRLS、Silent Siren、May’nが登場し、パワフルなガールズパワーを見せつけた。

On the same stage, there were fashion shows taking place between performances. Other than popular Japanese models, popular overseas talents Beckii Cruel and himezawa from the UK, Ines from France, Kelly from Singapore, and VIENNA from Thailand made an appearance. There was a Harajuku fashion show helpd by SPINNS and mer, a lolita fashion show by fashion magazine KERA, and an anime cosplay presentation held by Animate.
同ステージではライブパフォーマンスの合間にファッションショーが披露された。ショーでは日本の人気モデルのみならず、イギリスのベッキー・クルーエルやhimezawa、フランスのInes、シンガポールのKellyやタイのVIENNAなど、海外で人気を集める日本カルチャーファンも多数登場。 SPINNSやmerによるリアル原宿ファッションのほか、ファッション誌「KERA」によるロリータファッションや、アニメイトのアニメコスプレも披露された。

Cheeky Parade, DIANNA☆SWEET, drop, GALETTe*, Yun*chi and other artists for a total of
27 artists performed on the Nippon Stage (substage). The stage was smaller than the main stage, but the passion of the performers and fans showed to be just as great, if not more.
またサブステージの「にっぽんステージ」では、Cheeky Parade、DIANNA☆SWEET、drop、GALETTe*、Yun*chiなど総勢27組のアーティストが出演。メインに比べ小さなステージではあったが、それゆえ出演者とファンの熱気で、会場は他のステージにはない盛り上がりを見せていた。

As Kyary Pamyu Pamyu stepped foot on the main stage for the final appearance of the event, cheers could be heard from all over the venue. Just as expected from Japan’s pop culture icon, when she performed her hit songs like PON PON PON, Fashion Monster, and Ninjari Bang Bang, fans harmonized with her during the chorus and truly showed her overwhelming aura and ability to attract fans regardless of nationality.
そしてイベント最後の目玉としてきゃりーぱみゅぱみゅがメインステージに登場すると、会場からは大歓声が。「PON PON PON」「ファッションモンスター」「にんじゃりばんばん」などヒット曲を立て続けに披露し、ファンもきゃりーぱみゅぱみゅに合わせてコーラス。さすが「日本のポップカルチャーアイコン」と言わんばかりの圧倒的なオーラで、国籍問わずファンを魅了した。

Moshi Moshi Nippon Festival 2014 was held to inform overseas visitors of Japanese pop culture. There were many visitors who normally do not get to first handedly experience Japanese pop culture, but they also seemed to be many who were experimenting how to enjoy the different performances that day. I believe the exploration of how to enjoy Japan’s pop culture is a special and unique part of Japanese pop culture. By not only providing contents, but also sharing how to enjoy the pop culture, it can further inform and attract more people overseas.
日本のポップカルチャーを海外の方に知ってもらうことをメイン目的として開催されたもしもしにっぽんFestival2014。普段日本のポップカルチャーにあまり触れていない外国人来場者の方も多かったのか、得にアーティストのパフォーマンスでは楽しみ方を模索しているような雰囲気も見受けられた。日本のポップカルチャーは、その楽しみ方を含めて独特で特殊な文化になっていると思う。ただコンテンツを提供するだけではなく、楽しみ方をもともにシェアすることで、日本のポップカルチャーがさらに海外へと浸透していくのではないだろうか。
