On January 11th, Minami Sengoku, leader of UPUPGIRLS (KARI), completed the Mari Tanigawa Half Marathon (21.0975 km) with a time of 1:42:07 in her first challenge of such an event.
Sengoku’s successful completion of the half marathon brought her one step closer to her goal of placing in a marathon. When interviewed after the race Sengoku commented, “I finished! I can’t believe it! I was aiming to finish but I had no idea that I would have finished in 1 hour and 42 minutes! Running felt really good but, right now my whole body is at its limit. This is the first time for my legs to get stiff like this. My legs aren’t even working now but I’m glad that not only did I finish but I managed to finish in the 1:42 group!”
Even though Sengoku may have made those comments, she was back with UPUPGIRLS (KARI) to perform at DREAM ON! K-Pop Dance Fes Vol. 11 at TSUTAYA O-EAST as UFSZ (their K-pop dance cover group alter ego) only a few hours later. With the sheer physicality of a group like UPUPGIRLS (KARI), known for their 2-hour nonstop performances, it’s frightening to imagine what will happen when Sengoku is able to complete a full marathon. At the very least, when UPUPGIRLS (KARI) goes to the Honolulu Ekiden in May, it should be no problem for them to finish, even if Sengoku has to run the entire thing herself?
