38-Year-Old Mom Graduates from AKB48 : “Mariri is going to return to be a normal mom”

Back in April, the “Otona AKB48 Audition” was held as part of Ezaki Glico’s brand PAPICO campaign to audition a new over-30s member to join the group for a limited time. From over 5000 entries, Mariko Tsukamoto, a 37 year old mother (at the time) of 2 children, successfully made the cut as the “adult AKB48” member.
On September 1, Mariko a.k.a Mariri has graduated from the group at the AKB48 theater in Akihabara, Tokyo during Team 4′s performance. She performed Mariko Shinoda’s “Ue Kara Mariko” and declared after her four month stay in the group, “Mariri is going to return to being a normal mom for now.”
All the Team 4 members, who have performed with Mariko since her theater debut, told her “You could come back whenever you wanted!”, and thanked her for the great times they spent together .
During her time in the group, she was referred to as “mother of AKB” but she carried out activities as in the same as the other members, such as theater shows, concerts, TV appearances, handshake events, and so on. She even took part as the center for “Oshiete Mommy”, a coupling song on the group’s latest single.
