At the performance of Team A’s “Renai Kinshi Jourei” theater performance on February 3rd, Ayaka Morikawa announced her graduation from AKB48.
The announcement caused Karen Iwata and Natsuki Kojima to burst into tears. Morikawa and Kojima were particularly close, having joined the group as 11th generation Kenkyuusei during the summer of 2010. Morikawa held Kojima in her arms and let her cry on her shoulder. In a post on her Google+ page after the performance, Morikawa explained that she felt that she had to leave the group in order to take another step forward to her dream of being a model.
While it seems that there are quite a few graduation announcements happening in the past few days, it is important to remember that being an idol is often seen as a stepping stone to bigger dreams. Even if AKB48 has been able to become the biggest idol group in Japan, it does not always mean that every individual member’s dreams have come true as a result of it. Ayaka Morikawa has been quite active in appearing in magazine photoshoots, even being one of the winners of the First Young Jump Gravure Competition in 2014. Morikawa has not yet announced when her last performance and handshake event as an AKB48 member will be, so do all you can to see her before she graduates! At the very least, because she will be working towards a model, you can support her in her next endeavor as well!
