We Get our Fill of “Omurice” (Western Food Invented in Japan) at Pomme no Ki Harajuku
Pomme no Ki is a Japanese chain of restaurants specializing in strange and unusual varieties of omurice. There are many Japanese who think that omurice is a Western food but how many of you have actually heard of it outside of Japan? There’s probably not too many of you that have, right? That’s because omurice is a Western-style dish that was created in Japan (like Napolitan)! Generally, omurice is ketchup-flavored chicken fried rice wrapped in an omlette, a favorite meal for young people (and people who go to maid cafes).
On the menu of Pomme no Ki, there are over 30 different kinds of omurice! There are also things like pasta, doria, salads, and desserts on the side menu, in case you don’t feel like omurice (but if that’s the case, maybe you should have gone somewhere else to begin with?).
Today we have come to Pomme no Ki Harajuku, located in CUTE CUBE on Takeshita Street. It is located on the 3rd floor of this building facing Takeshita Street. You’ll see it as soon as you step out of the elevator.
After struggling over what to get, Tokyo Rad Girls’ Rinalee finally decided on the Mentaiko (spicy cod roe) Mayonnaise omurice. The combination of mentaiko and mayonnaise is one popular among the young women of Japan.
She digs into the mentaiko in the middle and takes a bite. Soooo good!
These photos are of the standard “Mozerella Cheese Tomato Sauce omurice and Cheese in Hayashi Sauce (another “Western food” created in Japan) omurice. For those who have never had omurice before, it’s probably best to start with one of these.
At Pomme no Ki, the omurice comes in 5 serving sizes: SS, S, M, L, and LL. The omurice in these pictures are all SS but, even this much is enough to make us feel full. The LL size is 6 times as big as this so if you really want to eat until you are so full that you get sleepy, we invite you to take on the challenge!
