If there’s one Japanese food that’s popular among foreigners, it’s sushi!  I went to one of Japan’s most unique sushi restaurants in Akihabara. There’s a strong image of sushi chefs being male, but at this sushi restaurant, all the sushi chefs are girls.

Upon reaching the top of the stairs of the second floor of the building in Akihabara where the restaurant is located, we were greeted by a wide, Japanese-style space. Then, girls wearing kimono, the traditional Japanese clothing, came to welcome us inside! We were greeted with a smile by Ms. Chizui, who was the head manager that day.

In addition to sushi, there are tempura and fried oysters on the menu, and with many items that caught my attention I decided to go with the standard favorite and ordered the “nadeshico set”.

Upon doing so, Ms. Chizui, unlike her previous smile before, began the familiar nigiri style sushi hand movements with a serious look on her face. A few minutes later, the seven ‘nigiri'(hand-shaped sushi) and sushi rolls were finished!

I couldn’t help but smile down at the sushi before my eyes!

Although chopsticks are available, it’s considered sophisticated to eat sushi by hand! I copied the way I’d seen it done before and dipped its topping in syoyu!

I stuffed it into my mouth without any hesitation.

My mouth was filled with happiness.

Despite not really knowing what to choose when asked, “What would you like to try next?” I ate one after another. The meal finished in no time at all.

Finally we quenched our thirst with some Japanese tea called “agari”.

I was full!

We were able to enjoy conversing with the female sushi chefs as well as enjoy tasting authentic sushi at this sushi restaurant. Doing away with our image that “eating at counter-style sushi restaurants is much too expensive”, the restaurant was very warm.
