During the evening theater performance of SKE48‘s KII “Ramune no Nomikata” performance on February 1st, team captain Airi Furukawa announced her intention to graduate from the group on March 31st.
Furukawa’s announcement comes shortly after the graduation of Mizuho Yamada (January 30) and brings the number of graduations from SKE for 2015 to six (seven if counting the graduation of Nana Yamada who is concurrently in SKE48 and NMB48). However, this does not compare to the mass graduation announcement of January 15, 2013 which included nine members: Mizuki Kuwabara, Shiori Takada, Kanako Hiramatsu, Kumi Yagami, Shiori Ogiso, Ririna Akaeda, Minami Hara, Kasumi Ueno, and Emiri Kobayashi.
An avid cosplayer and anime otaku, Furukawa is known for drawing “Chibi Airin”, a character which is a miniature version of herself, and manga-style pictures of group members on their birthdays and uploading them on her Google+ account. In the blog entry she posted later that evening, she explained that she was graduating to pursue her dreams of becoming an artist. While it is always sad news for fans when a member of a group, especially a founding member of a group decides to graduate, they must also remember that for young women in Japan, being an idol is a step towards a bigger dream. Remember all the great memories that Airi Furukawa has given us in the past 6 years, support her as a member of SKE48 until March 31st, and send her on her way to becoming an artist we can all be proud of!
