Self-proclaimed “Chame-Rock” (playful/mischievous rock) idol group Maria, with their sunglasses, leather jackets, and randoseru (backpacks commonly worn by elementary school students in Japan) have made their debut with the song “Hurricane” (release date: April 22).
“Hurricane” is a cover of the Chanels/Rats & Star retro rock song, which was also covered by Puffy AmiYumi in 2002. Yoshio Sato from Rats & Star even makes a few guest appearances in the video to lend his deep bass vocals to the song. Thankfully, all parties involved managed to avoid causing an international controversy by not putting on the dark makeup that Chanels/Rats & Star used to as a tribute to doo-wop groups of the past.
There’s even a “lyric version” in case you want to practice for karaoke!
“Geba” is more playful than “Hurricane”, featuring footage shot in classrooms, offices, and dressing rooms and featuring guest appearances by Rats & Star and staff members. It has been described as an attempt to create a new type of kayokyoku, a style of music which evolved into modern J-pop.
The MV for the 3rd track “Maria”, which is the group’s theme song, is packed full of live performance and behind the scenes footage. There’s even a short explanation about the group in English at the end.
It’s been a year since the project to make Maria the group that it is and it seems like the hard work has paid off since they will be one of the performers at Tokyo Idol Festival 2015! While it remains to be seen if they will be able to perform while wearing their leather jackets during the hottest time of the year in Japan, at least the sunglasses will help protect their eyes out in Odaiba this August?
