Japan is a land of mystery and intrigue with daunting cities and skyscrapers towering over you at one moment and rice fields with mountain streams and fireflies fluttering about in the next. It’s hard to describe just what it is that is so appealing and addictive about Japan, or why it has snatched so many of our hearts. Is it because of the pop culture scene? The way of life? The peace you find within yourself when you visit a temple or shrine for the first time?
The thing is, the answer varies for everyone and some people don’t even know the answer. Perhaps this is why David Anthony Parkison’s “Love Japan” video of his trip to Japan has become an absolute online sensation. His video has no words at all, with the sole exception of the title, and in the background features Bon Iver’s “Holocene”, which gives the video an almost silent and peaceful feel, allowing you to focus on the images unfolding before you. He does not attempt to explain or teach or tell. He simply shows, which has inspired many individuals to make the trek to Japan, while reminding others why they want to go back.
“Love Japan”
During his trip he visited many locations in Japan, including Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Nara, Tokyo, Nagano, and Hokkaido. However, he never says what part of his video is from where. This is ultimately extremely effective in evoking emotion out of his viewers; people who have been to Japan are left to reminisce and remember the places they visited themselves, while viewers who have not been to Japan are simply left to wonder and yearn.
