In celebration of Children’s Day in Brazil (October 12), “B-pop” (Brazilian pop) idol group from Gunma prefecture, Linda Sansei has released a MV for their Japanese/Portuguese cover of the popular children’s nursery rhyme “Pintinho Amarelinho”!
Titled “Piyo Piyo/Meu Pintinho Amarelinho”, the song mixes Japanese and Portuguese lyrics together as the members of Linda Sansei run around in the middle of Harajuku and dance along with people wearing bird hats. As Japan has the largest number of Portuguese speakers in Asia, which includes Brazilians of all ethnicities, and Brazil has the largest Japanese community overseas, the two countries have a special connection with each other. Although many Japanese seem to think that their country is a homogenous society, they have been assimilating and appropriating elements of other cultures for centuries (where do you think things like kanji, tofu, tempura, and crepes come from?) so it’s kind of exciting to see a group that mixes together Brazilian and Japanese music to create something unique. While so many Japanese groups are aiming to appear at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Linda Sansei invites listeners to come with them to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics instead!
