Maid café is one of the representative things of Japanese pop culture. In Akihabara, the Mecca of maid café, countless of them are clustered in the streets.
This time, out of all the maid cafes, we found a very unique one called “Shangrila”! We visited here with the crew of Kawaii Asia, Kumikky (Kumiko Funayama) and Pikarin (Hikari Shiina), and the moment we opened the door, a chubby maid greeted us with the voice of “Poccha-erinasaimase~!” (pocchari = chubby in Japanese) As you may guess, this is a maid café where all the maids are chubby.
While there is a stereotype in Japan that thin women are beautiful, that kind of bias will be wiped away after you see the pocchari maids in Shangrila. The maids in this café are all charming, kind, positive, and have a lovely smile!
In this café, only girls who have at least BMI of 25 will be able to work. The color of the uniform differs according to the BMI, with purple, green, and pink from the lowest to highest rank. Uyu-san with the pink uniform who guided us the café mentioned that she has BMI of 30 and weighs 105kg. The pocchari maid in the right is Mary, and the middle is Seina. Mary told us a positive episode where she was glad that she was chubby, saying, “I never get injured because my fat protects me even when I fall down! I never went to the hospital before!” (*The weight is the data of June 1, the day of shooting).
In addition, the appealing point of Shangrila is not only the maids, but also the delicious food! The food here is super tasty because the chef who has been working at a fancy Italian restaurant for 10 years is making the meals. It is surprising to hear that the pizza are made from dough and baked in the stone oven in the café.
And here is the Shangrila parfait! At glance it looks like sweets, but…it’s actually full of pocchari-ingredients such as rice, fried chicken, and potatoes! Don’t worry if you can’t eat them all, because the maids will eat the rest for you.
Shangrila is a place where you can enjoy the delicious food and super-positive maids! You will surely be in a happy mood by the time you leave the café.
