These Girls Rock! Five Idol Groups That Go to 11

It seems like in the past few months there have been countless reports of Babymetal taking over the world with their brand of “kawaii metal” but, they are not the only group mixing the cuteness of idols with the sounds of distorted guitars and thundering drums. Even though there may be a stereotypical image of conventional idol music being saccharine sweet and adorned with frills, it has not always abided by those guidelines. Whether it was the pop-punk sounds of Morning Musume Otome Gumi’s “Yuujou ~ Kokoro no Busu ni wa Naranee!~ “ (2004), Momoiro Clover Z’s epic “Mouretsu Uchuu Koukyouku Dai 7 Gakushou ‘Mugen no Ai’” (2012) featuring ex-Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman, or AKB48’s “Korogaru Ishi ni Nare” (2006), there has always been a place for idol fans to pump their fists and bang their heads. This list is not meant to be all inclusive, and because we are only presenting 5 groups at this time, there will be another installment to introduce more groups later. As criteria for selection was limited to groups that are: 1) currently active and 2) not bands, groups like BiS, SCANDAL, Gacharic Spin, ZONE, MARIA, et al. were excluded. The groups are listed below in alphabetical order.

Babyraids

This 5 member group from the same agency as 9nine (LesPros) seek to invade and takeover other idol events, regularly appearing in Shibuya or outside other idol concerts to promote themselves by passing out flyers and tissue packets. Babyraids made their debut in 2012 with the help of Idoling!!! member Ami Kikuchi and perform weekly at Toranomon Dojo which is located in Pony Canyon’s headquarters. Members of Japanese rock bands like Sex Machineguns, Dragon Ash, Hawaiian 6, SOPHIA, and Snail Ramp have contributed to shaping Babyraids’ fist-pumping sound. Their biggest hit “Koyomi no ue de wa December” was featured on the NHK morning drama “Ama-chan” and got Babyraids a 5th place ranking on the Oricon.
