So what makes the convenience stores actually “convenient”?
First of all, according to the Japan Franchise Association, there are about 52,000 convenience stores in Japan that can be found anywhere and is accessible. Secondly, there are a variety of goods offered that make your life easier. Not only snacks and sweets, they sell onigiri (rice balls), bread, rice, instant ramen, and hot foods such as nikuman(steamed bun) and oden (a one-pot-wonder dish). Most places also store different kinds of soft drinks and alcohol including green tea, lemon tea, coffee, juice, beer, wine, nihonshu, and shochu. Other than foods and drinks, they also provide necessary goods such as shampoo, hand cream, battery, socks, t-shirt, cosmetics, and umbrellas.
The wide variety of food offered in convenience stores is one of the main reasons why people of different age range come. For example, children and teenagers buy snacks, whereas people who live single buy boxed lunch or dish for dinner.
Within the past few years, convenience stores with eating spaces are increasing, where customers can eat the food they bought at the store and have a chat in. Mini Stop is famous for having eating spaces, but Family Mart and CircleKSunkus have also started to increase their shops with them.
Also, there are useful services in convenience stores. For example, you can use the ATM in the store to withdraw your money. The process is very simple, and the language on the screen and the detailed statement can be changed into four different languages, so there is no worry of reading the screen in Japanese. In addition, you can make ticket reservations for concerts, sport events, and theme parks. Also, when you are struggling to find a free Wi-Fi access, convenience stores can be a place where you can go to because some stores offer free access to Wi-Fi. You can also pay fee for public services such as water bill or power rates.
By the way, especially in countryside, it is said that convenience store is a place where young students meet up as there is few entertaining spot rather than convenience store and the parking area is large enough to stay. And you know, convenience stores have everything from fashion magazine to snacks!
