Girls rock band Chatmonchy, after almost two years from their last release, comes out with two MVs for their new single, “Kokoro to Atama” (“Heart and Mind”) / “Itachi Gokko” (“Cat and Mouse”), released on October 29th.
The MV to “Kokoro to Atama” (“Heart and Mind”), was directed by nuQ, who has recently garnered much attention from her movie, comic, and animation work. This work, which took three months to complete, explores the gap between ‘heart’ and ‘mind’, and depicts the ‘heart’ being chased after.
The video took advantage of the nuQ’s unique animation style, and when put together with the song, creates a powerful and colorful metamorphose. nuQ commented on the MV, stating
“As I listened to the song, I came away with the message that the things we have felt by our ‘heart’ and perceived with our ‘mind’ are sometimes on the same page, but at other times are completely different, and that it would be better if our conflicting or opposing feelings and logic could come together as one.
In the song, the ‘heart’ and the ‘mind’ are split, but it’s possible for yesterday’s ‘heart’ and today’s ‘heart’ to contradict itself as well, or that even if one’s ‘heart’ and ‘mind’ are one and the same, a third person’s point of view might challenge that.
Additionally, the height of feeling and logic is not something constant, and feeling either elated or down can cause it to change. Because of this, throughout the animation the character, objects, and chronological order presented bear the weight of separation, and through the transformation of these separate pieces, they form a state where they come together and separate again.” (nuQ)
The director for the MV to “Itachi Gokko” (“Cat and Mouse”), Santa Yamagishi, has previously worked with Gen Hoshino, UNICORN, and KANA-BOON. Actress Riho Yoshioka plays the role of the protagonist, an “OL (Office Lady). 24 years old. Record company worker.” in this musical-style music video, illustrating a very erratic day in her life, which carries a very poignant message within its beautiful visual imagery.
From October 2011, Chatmonchy has continued on as a two-member unit. Supporting members Akira Tsuneoka and Ryosuke Shimomura, who are active in the Japanese rock scene, were welcomed as collaborators on both songs, and although this is only their first release as a four-member group, it’s likely to attract much attention.
