Sento are public bathhouses which have been a part of Japanese culture for centuries and it may be worlds away from a lot of the latest Japanese culture usually featured on Tokyo Girl’s Update, but with the cooperation of TOKYO SENTO, we have begun our journey into the unique and comforting world of Sento as “SENTO GIRL” photograph project welcoming Kanako Hiramatsu and Aris Mukaide as models.
For the series vol.3, we have visited Teikokuyu in Arakawa-ku, welcoming miss iD 2015 Shuku Mari as a model.
Shuku Mari is known as a big fan of Sento and that huge love made her to do part time job at Showa Yokujo sento in Nakano. Her future dream is to run a Sento! From such a sento lover’s point of view, Teikokuyu is one of the attractive Sento in Tokyo which originally started in Taisho period.
These photos are the result of a collaboration between model Shuku Mari, photographer and Miss iD 2016 semifinalist mitfo and hair make-up artist hitomi. We want to show you Sento’s new appeal through the collaboration of these wonderful creators!
The wall paint of this Sento was made by Kutani-yaki, pottery with overglaze painting, made in Ishikawa Prefecture, as the original owner of this Sento was from Ishikawa. Painting of Mt. Fuji on the wall is typical for Sento, however, the illustration of carps is quite unique. As we showed in the vol.1, this Sento has well maintained garden and there are beautiful carps in the pond.
SENTO GIRL with Shuku Mari will be a 3-part series and vol.1 focused on the entrance and outside of the bath. In vol.2 we show more pictures of inside the sento with Shuku Mari, and in vol.3 to be released on March 21st, there will be pictures of Shuku Mari playing in the bath!
