5 Cute Girl Anime Characters You Should Be Familiar With

Anime, or Japanese animation, is known for having a unique style that sets it apart from western cartoons. Characters often have pronounced features, such as large and bright eyes and colorful hair. This often allows character creation to take on a whole new level of cuteness not seen in other styles of animation. Manga, or Japanese comics, often follow a very similar style. I would like to introduce some examples of girl anime and manga characters anyone can appreciate!

Yotsuba Koiwai

Yotsuba is the main character of the slice-of-life manga and anime Yotsuba&!. She is a young girl who is entranced by the things around her, and lives with her single father. As she reacts to every new finding, she displays a huge range of emotions and expressions that never fail to be hilarious!

“Menma” (Meiko Honma)

Menma is one of the main characters of the recent hit series, Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. The series focuses on a group of friends who drift apart after the childhood death of Menma. Menma comes back several years later as an apparition, and interestingly enough is slowly able to bring her friends back together. Besides her cute, small frame and rather petite appearance, her frivolous and lively personality and general selflessness make her all the more a great character.

Sakura Kinomoto

Sakura Kinomoto is the 10 year-old protagonist of the late 1990s hit anime series, Cardcaptor Sakura. Although the anime aired nearly a decade and a half ago, Sakura’s personality and cuteness is absolutely timeless. At the beginning of the series, Sakura accidentally unleashes a set of magical cards into the real world (oops!). Instead of shirking responsibility, she decided to take on the arduous task of collecting them and sealing them away. In doing so, she must battle the magical personification (read: monster) of each card. Unlike many other magical girl series, Cardcaptor Sakura changes her outfit for every battle, each one a unique and very cute design!

Edward

Edward, a side character from the classic space sci-fi anime series Cowboy Bebop, is not your average cute anime girl. Edward is a rather androgynous character, is actually extremely intelligent and is a renowned hacker. Despite this, the character is easily distracted, a rather childish characteristic that makes her a more relatable and well-rounded character (and not to mention fun to watch bounce around!).

Kiki

Kiki is the 13 year-old witch from Studio Ghibli’s 1989 hit movie, Kiki’s Delivery Service. The story begins with Kiki moving away home with her adorable cat, Jiji. Although she is only just starting her journey to adulthood and independence, she is surprisingly resourceful for her age and starts her own delivery service. If the adorable huge red bow on her head and cute smile doesn’t hit your cute buttons, I don’t know what will!
