While it is not known what will happen with the Hollywood film remake of the super popular manga Death Note, the latest news in Japan is that former AKB48 member Rina Kawaei has been added to the cast of “Death Note 2016”! Joining young actors Masaki Suda, Sosuke Ikematsu, and Masahiro Higashide, Kawaei will play Sakura Aoi, one of the owners of 6 Death Notes that have been unleashed in the world, 10 years after the deaths of Light Yagami and L.

Rina Kawaei’s comment: I have never played this kind of role before so, I was really interested in doing it. It’s a new challenge so I am really happen to be given the opportunity. While I’m really excited to see what would happen if I were to pick up a Death Note and it’s a strange feeling to know that there would be so many people around me dying but, I was allowed to play it just like I were a normal young woman. I think I sort of resemble my character Sakura Aoi because we are both very curious about things. Watching the films from before, it was really thrilling to see who would end up being the last one left so, I also felt that excitement for this project. I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished film.

Death Note 2016 is being directed by Shinsuke Sato (Gantz, Library Wars) and the screenplay is by Tsugumi Ohba, author of the original manga. Citing the rule stating that only 6 Death Notes may exist in the human world at one time as a critical plot point of “Death Note 2016”, the potential for some epic mind games is high. “Death Note 2016” is scheduled to be released in Autumn 2016.
