Exclusive Interview with ANGERME : Rina Katsuta

In May of 2010 S/mileage made their major label debut with their single “Yumemiru Fifteen”. Then in October of 2011, S/mileage sub-members Kana Nakanishi, Akari Takeuchi, Rina Katsuta, and Meimi Tamura became official members of the group, and S/mileage had their massively successful first solo concert at the Nippon Budokan. In December of 2014, with the arrival of three new members, Maho Aikawa, Rikako Sasaki, and Mizuki Murota, the group changed their name to ANGERME. During their November 29, 2015 performance at the Nippon Budokan, first generation member Kanon Fukuda graduated, and new member, Moe Kamikokuryo, joined the group on November 11th.
2010年5月にシングル「夢見る15歳」で「スマイレージ」としてメジャーデビュー。2011年10月にはサブメンバーだった中西香菜、竹内朱莉、勝田里奈、田村芽実が正規メンバーに昇格し、2014年には武道館単独ライブを成功させた。2014年12月には、相川茉穂、佐々木莉香子、室田瑞希の3人を新たに向かえ、グループ名を「アンジュルム」に改名。そして、2015年11月11日に新メンバー上國料萌衣が加入するなか、2015年11月29日の日本武道館公演を以て１期生メンバー福田花音が卒業。

Although Meimi Tamura has plans to graduate at their next Nippon Budokan performance on May 30th, ANGERME will release their fourth single “Tsugitsugi Zokuzoku”/”Itoshima Distance”/”Koi nara Tokku ni Hajimatteru” on April 27th. Since this will be their last single with all nine members, Tokyo Girls’ Update sat down with all of them to ask them about the music video shoot for “Tsugitsugi Zokuzoku”.
今年5月30日の武道館公演で田村芽実の卒業が決まっているなか、4thシングル「次々続々／糸島Distance／恋ならとっくに始まってる」が4月27日にリリース予定。現9名では最後のシングルとなる。Tokyo Girls’ Updateは今回のシングルの表題曲でもある「次々続々」のMV撮影現場にお伺いし、メンバー全員にインタビューをさせて頂きました。

– First of all, this time we are asking each of the members to introduce one of the 3 songs on the single. Could you tell us about the song “Tsugitsugi Zokuzoku” please?
まず今回は新曲三つのうち、みなさんに一曲ずつご担当頂いて紹介してもらっているのですが、勝田さんには「次々続々」についてお聞きしてもよいでしょうか？

Rina: Of course! We performed this song live many times before but, when we first heard the recording of this song, I got the impression that, “This is a song that will get things really excited live!” When we performed this song live, as expected it was very exciting and even some fans said things like, “It’s a really great song!” I’m really happy that it’s a song suited for a live, and we increased the amount of exciting songs we have. It’s really uptempo and easy to follow along, or should I say, it’s easy to cheer along to so, I think it’s easy for the fans to remember.
勝田: はい！「次々続々」はライブで何回か披露したんですけど、私たちも最初に音源を聞いた時に、「これライブで盛り上がりそうだな」っていう印象を受けた曲だったんです。それで実際にライブでやった時に、やっぱりすごく盛りあがって、ファンの方にも「すごい良い曲！」って言って頂けて。本当にライブにふさわしい曲で、また盛り上がる曲が増えてすごくうれしいなって思います。とてもアップテンポな曲だし、ノリやすいというか、応援しやすい曲だと思うので、ファンの方にも覚えてもらいやすいかなと思います。

– The dance is really cool and there are many representative poses in it…
ダンスがすごくかっこいいというか、決めポーズみたいなのがたくさんありますよね。

Rina: Yes, there are. Since there are 9 members, there were not many occasions for all of us to do the same choreography: for example, we’re often divided into groups of three. However, for “Tsugitsugi Zokuzoku” it’s completely different. We do a sort of line dance, moving from back to front. It’s rather simple but oddly enough, it’s something that ANGERME never did before.For everyone to be doing the same thing together is kind of new for us. The sense of unity, being part of one body, is something I really like about it.
勝田: そうですね、人数が9人もいるので、最近は全員が全員同じ振りをやる、っていうのはあんまりなかったんですよ。3グループに分かれて踊る、とかが最近多い中、「次々続々」はみんなでラインダンスというか、前後をチェンジして同じ振りをやるっていう、単純なんだけど意外とアンジュルムではやってなかったことをやっています。全員が全員同じ振り付けをやるっていうことが、なんかまた新しい。9人の統一感と言うか一体感があって、すごく私はお気に入りです。

Rina: I think that the dance part is the highlight of this MV because we danced a lot! We took more takes filming the dance parts than the image or lip scenes. Because it’s the first single for these 9 members together, I’d like people to pay attention to the dance scenes. To be honest, the choreography seriously hurts my lower back.(laugh)
勝田: そうですね、ＭＶ撮影の時はダンスシーンをとにかくいっぱい撮ったのでダンスが見所ですね。イメージとかリップシーンよりもかなり時間をかけてダンスシーンを撮ったので。また新しくなった9人っていうのを見てもらう初めてのシングルになるので、ダンスに注目してもらいたいです。実は、すごい腰が痛くなるダンスなんですよ（笑）。

Rina: That’s why everybody has muscle pain when we’re dancing. I want our fans to be careful when copying our choreography (laugh).
勝田: だからこのダンスをしているとき、みんな筋肉痛になって。だからファンの方もマネする時はちょっと注意してもらいたいかなって思います（笑）。

– Be cautious of your hips, right? (laugh) Thank you very much. Next, I would like you to tell us about the concert tour “Kyuui Ittai”. Compared to the previous concert tour “Hyakka Ryouran”, this is the second tour for ANGERME and the first for these 9 members. Are there any changes or some new things you have been able to do this time? Please tell us.
腰に注意、ですね（笑）。ありがとうございます。では次は今回の「九位一体」ツアーについてお聞きしたいんですけど、前回の「百花繚乱」ツアーと比べて、アンジュルムとして二回目の、新しい9人としてのツアーですけど、変わった点だったり、新しく出来るようになった事だったり、勝田さんが考えている事について聞かせて下さい。

Rina: Since “Hyakka Ryouran” there was only one member that’s different but, personally I think that ANGERME has been changed since the beginning of this year. Fukuda-san graduated and the inexperienced Kamikokuryou Moe-chan joined the group. In a good sense, our freshness comes out more; I think we’ve come to look like a fresher group.
勝田:「百花繚乱」とは一人メンバーが違うだけなんですけど、私的に今年に入ってから大分雰囲気が変わったな、と思って。福田さんが卒業して、新しく何もやったことない未経験の上國料萌衣ちゃんが入ってきて。良い意味でフレッシュさがで出て、新鮮なグループに見えるようになったんじゃないかなって思います。

Rina: It must have been really tough for Kamiko (Kamkikokuryou Moe) as she did not have any experience before. So, we divided up the members in order to give some lessons to her when preparing this for tour. However, we did not have enough time so I think it was hard for Kamiko to learn many things in a short term. But the first day of the tour was successful, and it seems that Kamiko has gotten used to it.
勝田: かみこ（上國料萌衣）もすごく大変だったと思うんですよ、未経験だったから。今回のツアーのために、１人何曲かずつ担当曲を持って、かみこに教える、っていうのをやったんです。それくらい時間もタイトだったし、その分かみこも短時間でやらなきゃいけないことが多かったので、準備は今までよりも大変だったんです。でも無事初日を終えて、かみこも慣れてきた気がします。

– It’s a perfect comment as a senpai! Tamura-san will graduate on May 30th, but would you please share a message to her with us?
さすが先輩らしいコメントです。では、田村さんが5月30日に卒業されるということで、一言贈る言葉を頂いてもいいでしょうか。

Rina: Mei and I are from the same generation, and the same age as well, so when I heard about her graduation, I thought it was too quick especially because she is still so young. But on the other hand, I thought Mei was right because this time before turning 20 years old is an important occasion to think about our futures. She thought about it a lot, and decided to be a musical actress and I respect that decision. However, it still doesn’t feel like she will be graduating soon. Will she really graduate on May 30th? (laugh). Being together with her is too natural for me. The second generation members have never gotten to hang out, just the 4 of us, before either! We would do things like go and eat but, I really want to do something together.
勝田: めいとは同期で、且つ同い年でもあるので、卒業するって初めて聞いたときは「早いな」って正直最初に思ったんです、年齢的にもまだ全然いけるのに。でも確かに20歳手前って、自分の将来について考える時期でもあるから、そこについてはめいの決断に納得できるというか。考えて考えて、ミュージカル女優になりたい、っていう目標を導きだして決断した、っていう部分はすごく尊敬できるというか。ただやっぱり、卒業するという実感がないというのが本音で。本当に5月30日で卒業しちゃうのかな？　って（笑）。一緒に居るのが当たり前すぎて。あと、２期メンバー４人でプライベートで遊んだ事が1回も無いんですよ！　ちょっとご飯食べに行く、とかはあるんですけど。なのでどこかに遊びに行きたいですね。

Rina: I want to go to the “the Land of Dreams” (laugh). But Mei hates scary rides! She’ll ride it but she’ll have the hand of the person next to her in a tight grip the entire time (laugh). It’s really fun to see her reaction (laugh). So I want to go to “the Land of Dreams” together. It’s perfect because 4 is an even number. (laugh)
勝田: “夢の国”に行きたいです（笑）。でもめいが絶叫系が無理なんですよ！　無理矢理乗らせると乗るんですけど、隣に座った子の手とかを超強い力で握ってくるんですよ（笑）。その反応を見るのも楽しいんですよね……（笑）。なので４人で夢の国に行きたいです。偶数なのでちょうどいいし（笑）。

– It ‘ll be nice if you can go! I’ll change the topic but you have recently been posting pictures on the app “WEAR” right?
行けるといいですね！　話は変わりますが、勝田さんは最近「WEAR」（編注：コーディネイト写真投稿アプリ）をやられていますよね。

Rina: Yes! My parents love fashion and I remember that they took me to many clothing shops since I was really small. Pretty recently, I found that I have come to love fashion. I was sort of picky about fashion since I was little and I often said things like, “I don’t like that!” or “I love it!”. It’s really the best feeling to look at clothes.
勝田: はい！　元々親がすごくファッションが好きで、小さい頃から色んな服屋さんに連れて行かれたな、って記憶があります。でも自分が本当にファッション好きだなって思ったのは結構最近で。昔からこだわりみたいなのはあったんですけどね、これはイヤとかこれは好きとか。服を見ているのがもう、至福の時、って感じです。

“WEAR” is a good app to show off my clothes to others but it is also a good tool to remember what I’m wearing. For example, I try to not wear the same coordinate I’ve already posted. I love thinking of coordinating with the clothes I have! I’m really happy that I could do something with this app.
「WEAR」では、日頃のファッションを人に見てもらうっていうのもそうなんですけど、自分の記録用にもなるんですよね。なので、過去の自分の投稿を見て、同じ組み合わせをできるだけしないようにしています。持ってるもので使い回しができるというか、そういうコーディネイトを自分で考えるのも楽しいので！　そういうアプリに参加できて本当に嬉しいです。

– Do you have any favorite fashion models?
好きなモデルさんとかっているんですか？

Rina: My favorite is Rola. She’s so fashionable that she’s like someone I could never hope to reach. More than someone I want to copy, she’s someone I really admire. The way she uses color is really fashionable. When I see the outfits she wears, I try to use something I have that’s a similar color or has a similar pattern that I can use as a reference.
勝田: １番好きなのはローラさんです。すごいおしゃれで、私には手が届かなすぎる存在なので、マネしたいというよりは憧れの方です。色使いとかが本当におしゃれ。ローラさんのコーデを見て、自分の持ってる似てる色や形のアイテムを使ってみたり、という感じで参考にしています。

– Do you have any plans to work in the fashion world?
ファッション関係のお仕事で挑戦してみたいことはありますか？

Rina: I want to appear in many fashion magazines. For example, Suzuki Airi-san from ℃-ute is active as a model in fashion magazines and being an idol at the same time. Because I have such a sempai, I really admire her. Even if I’m not exclusive to any magazine, I have dreams of expanding the things I can do. I’d love it if when people discuss “fashion” when it comes to Hello! Project, my name were to come up.
勝田: 私はファッション誌にいっぱい出たいなと思っていて。例えば℃-uteの鈴木愛理さんとか、アイドルのお仕事をやりながら専属モデルをやられている先輩がいるので、そういうのもすごく憧れですし、専属じゃなくてもファッション雑誌にも活動の場を広げていきたいっていうのが夢ですね。ハロプロのなかでファッションと言えば、っていうときに私の名前が挙がるくらいに、いずれはなっていきたいですね。

– Finally, do you have any message for fans overseas?
では最後に、海外のファンの方に一言コメントを頂けますか？

Rina: There are so many fans from a lot of different countries coming to see ANGERME’s concerts. I really appreciate it but at the same time I feel bad because it is always them coming to see us. I asked overseas fans once, “Why did you come?” and they answered, “Because ANGERME doesn’t come!” (laugh) But it’s true. ANGERME has never performed overseas so I really want to make it happen this year.
勝田: 日本でやってるアンジュルムのライブに、本当に色んな国の方が海外から観に来てくれるんですよ。すごくありがたいと同時にすごく申し訳なくて。いつも日本に観に来てもらっていて。「どうしてこんなに来てくれるの？」って聞いたら「だってアンジュルム来てくれないから！」って言われちゃったんですよ（笑）。本当にその通りなんですよ。アンジュルム海外公演をやったことがないので、今年にでも実現させたいです。

Rina: There were a lot of Thai fans, Taiwanese fans, Korean fans, and French fans, so I want to go to each of those countries. We have to go because the fans told us, “Because ANGERME doesn’t come!”. Please wait for us!
勝田: ファンの方にタイ、台湾、韓国、フランスの方が多いので、その国ひとつひとつに行きたいですね。ファンのみなさんに「だってアンジュルム来てくれないから！」って言われちゃったから……本当に行かないと！　待ってて下さい！
