All: Yes.

Arai: It might be the first and the last one (laugh).

All: We want to go overseas more!

-For what reason did you go to Thailand?

Miyamoto: It was annual event called “J-Series Festival”. Every year one Japanese group is invited to perform there.

-And you were chosen for that.

Miyamoto : Yes, but it was right after we made our debut. The guest the year before was TOKYO GIRLS’ STYLE, so we were surprised like, “What?!”.

-But you were selected because people who host the event chose you.

Ishino: We performed “17-sai” and “Hatsukoi” there. “Hatsukoi” has a sense of Japanese masterpiece music, so we believe we could deliver Japanese culture through music, which I think is something only we can do compared to other Japanese idols.

-I see. So you think you were chosen because you are a group who can convey the good points of Japanese songs?

Ishino: I’m not really sure, it might be only a 1% possibility (laugh).

-So it’s like almost nothing (laugh).

All: (laughs)

Arai: The audience overseas seemed really easy-going, and warm.

All: Right, exactly!

Higa: They were so warm, as I expected from “The Land of Smiles”.

Ishino: They shouldn’t know our songs, but they copied our choreography and did it together with us. They remembered our names instantly and did call and response after the self introduction part.

Miyamoto: Everyone was really easy-going.

Ishino: I was surprised! I thought it must be “away ground” for us, but they welcomed us so kindly.

idol-renaissance-interview-27

Momo’oka: They even saw us off at the venue!

All: It was amazing!

Momo’oka: I felt like we were stars! (laugh)

Ishino: It’s like Hollywood stars were walking on the Red Carpet. It was awesome like that! There were several hundreds of people. It’s also like how popular athletes are welcomed by fans at Haneda Airport. It was really amazing like that.

idol-renaissance-interview-30

Momo’oka: They called our names.

Arai: Like, \Mainaaaa/.

All: (laughs)

Ishino : Maina was especially popular in Thailand! (laugh)

idol-renaissance-interview-59

Higa: Some Thai people who became our fans there came to our concerts in Japan.

Arai: Yes! Some still keep coming. I’m really thankful for that.

Higa: We want to go overseas again, right?

Arai: Yes, very soon!

Ishino: There are a lot of events about Japan held in London, Paris, or Los Angeles. We want to attend those kind of events! We are covering famous Japanese songs, so we have clear strong point of “performing classic Japanese songs”.

idol-renaissance-interview-48

Arai: Different from kawaii culture, we can deliver the different feelings in the Japanese music that everyone listens to, the feelings of J-POP.

Miyamoto: We want to have chances to communicate through our music overseas!

-Which country do you want to go to the most?

Miyamoto: London!

Ishino & Arai: France!

-There are J-culture related events in Paris and London every summer. First in Paris, and in London one week after that one. Some artists go to Paris and move on to London, as the two cities are close to each other.

Higa: Cool, I want to try that.

Ishino: But I also want to go to Kenya (laugh).

-Hm? What did you say?

Ishino: Kenya!

-I have never heard of idols who have performed in Kenya before.

Ishino: I’m interested in African ethnic music! I’m guessing that we might be able to bring people together through music. They seem warm, ah I mean, not just the temperature.

-You mean people there, right. I see.

Higa: But yes, we want to bring people together with our music, even if we can’t communicate through language.

Minamibata: We want to go a lot places!

Ishino: We like performing on open-air stages and many of our release events are held at open-air stages, so our dream stage is field of grass, like the place where sheep are!

idol-renaissance-interview-52

Minamibata: I want to sing “Funny Bunny” there!

Ishino : I want to sing under the aurora borealis

All: Ahhhhhhh!

-I think it would be extremely cold.

Arai: No it’s impossible! The microphones will freeze! (laugh)

Momo’oka: Then how about doing it a capella?

Ishino: Don’t you get romantic or sentimental feelings on evenings when it’s really cold?

Miyamoto : That’s just you. (laugh)

idol-renaissance-interview-51

-By the way, is there any Western song you want to cover?

Ishino: Suppose that we’re going to overseas someday, it would be great if we can sing songs that everyone knows.

Momo’oka : “Let it go”!

All: No no no (laughs)

Momo’oka : “Let it be”!

-Ah, that’s a really famous song indeed. Good idea. To wrap things up, would you like to tell us your wishes or goals as you welcome your second anniversary?

Momo’oka: I want to spread our concept “Mei-kyoku Renaissance” (Renaissance of famous songs) by visiting many more places. I’m living in Iwate and sometimes appear on the radio, so I would like more people to know that I’m “Koyoi Momo’oka, from Iwate”. I also want to do more activities in Iwate.

-I see, thank you.

Arai: Our number one goal is to have more people know about us by continuing our “Mei-kyoku Renaissance”. Because our album is on sale now, it’s a chance for us to appeal to a lot of people through our music. During the last one-man live, we were able to do an acoustic live, and reach people through our music in a different way. I want to have more of those kind of opportunities so we can reach out to a lot more people through music in our own way. As for me, my parents love traveling abroad and I was able to visit a lot of different countries since I was very young so I really, absolutely want to have Idol Renaissance become known overseas someday (laugh)!

idol-renaissance-interview-37

Miyamoto: Just like everyone has said, Idol Renaissance is a group that covers famous songs and reinterprets them with our singing and dancing; that is the “Mei-kyoku Renaissance”, and so that’s what we want to be more known for. Right now, our album which is packed full of the past 2 years is on sale so I hope a lot of people will pick it up. I want to make our 2nd anniversary one-man live on May 4th be the best day ever. Also, because we cover songs by rock bands, I want us to be invited to perform at rock festivals too! That’s something we have been saying every year but I don’t think it’s naive to hope for but it’s something to reach for as we look to broaden our activities. Make sure our live on May 4th is a success, and then from there, I want to perform on outdoor stages during the summer and have another one-man live after that…Our goals are to never stop dreaming and to work towards making them become reality. Because right now is a precious time in our lives, I want us to join together and keep running towards those dreams.

Higa: As everyone is saying, I also want to become known by a lot more people who don’t know us, through “Mei-kyoku Renaissance”, as this is the thing only we can do. Also I want to do my best towards the concert to be held on May 4, and after that too, as a lot of idol festivals are waiting during summer!

idol-renaissance-interview-57

Higa: I want to become more unified with all of the members and step forward by doing our best on every concert. By the way, I’m from Okinawa but haven’t back home once since moving to Tokyo two years ago.

-What? Even once? Even not on New Year’s Day?

Higa: I went back home right after I moved here during the summer, but never after that. My mom sometimes comes to visit me from Okinawa, but not my dad or brother. I decided not going back to Okinawa until I can go and perform there as Idol Renaissance. I really want to make this come true this year. I want to Idol Renaissance become known in Okinawa as well, along with other areas.

Minamibata: We have visited six prefectures in Kanto area, and Iwate and Hiroshima as well. We want to appeal Idol Renaissance more by visiting a lot of places, not just our hometown. We want to challenge covering various songs such as Western music we’ve never done before. Try singing new genre’s song will give us more knowledge about music, and we want to reach the level that we can cover that kind of new genre’s songs, then perform them overseas. We really wish more overseas people to know about us! I personally love band music and Ishino loves Western music. She kindly often teaches me about Western songs. I want to search and listen the songs I have never listened to before too. I want to study more.

All: (laughs)

idol-renaissance-interview-21

Minamibata: Ah I mean, not like studying math or science! I want to study English and music more, so that I can communicate and perform properly for the future day when we perform overseas. Idol Renaissance wants to challenge various things, so do I.

Ishino: I also have the same feelings as everyone else, through the renaissance of famous songs, become known by a lot more people. We say “famous songs” but we are covering minor songs of famous artists and hidden masterpiece songs too. We want people get known such great songs through us. Our goal is, of course we want to perform on bigger stages, but at the same time, we have to make success on each events or concerts. Steady works must make us go forward, so our current goal is making the tickets for 3rd one-man live on May 4 sold out.
