HKT48’s Thrilling Return to the Tokyo Idol Festival

Temperatures rose above 35℃ on the first day of the 2014 Tokyo Idol Festival but HKT48 still managed to bring the heat of 100 bowls of Hakata ramen and 100 spicy mentaiko onigiri to the thousands in attendance at Odaiba’s Hot Stage on August 2nd. As the familiar strains of Overture echoed through the thick summer air, the crowd, which extended all the way until the concession stand 200 meters away from the stage, came alive with excitement. Kicking things off with their third single “Sakura, minna de tabeta”, HKT48 followed up with an enthusiastic rendition of AKB48’s “Kimi no koto suki dakara” and their first single “Suki! Suki! Skip!”.

After a short self-introduction and talk, in which Anna Murashige, looking a lot more like model Reina Triendl than usual, performed her infamous “mentaiko” gag. Seeing that even fans in the back of the free area had done the “mentaiko pose” along with Murashige, Rino Sashihara remarked at how much better it had gone over compared to last year. Natsumi “Boss” Tanaka also jokingly asked Sashihara “How is the enthusiasm of the ‘Sasshi’ who ranked second in the election?” Taken aback, Sashihara retorted, “Don’t bully #2! There’s probably some people here who have no idea what’s going on but, this girl (Tanaka) has never picked once for an HKT48 single!” Tanaka ended the debate by saying, “But I’m here today aren’t I?”

HKT48 then donned red, yellow, and blue happi coats for “Koi no Onawa” and “Wink no 3kai”. This was followed up with AKB48’s ultra popular and lively songs “Iiwake Maybe” and “Oogoe Diamond” During the second talk, Sashihara noticed SKE48/Nogizaka 46 member Rena Matsui in the press area and called for the arrest of 13-year old member Nako Yabuki for lying about her height in her profile (she reported it as being 138 cm when she was really 137.7 cm). The performance drew to a close with “HKT48”, “Rock da yo, jinsei wa…” where the members of HKT48 tossed placards personally signed by them into the crowd and ended with their second single “Melon Juice”. As one of the hottest performances of the weekend, it’s a shame that only a small portion of it ended up being broadcast. If a regular HKT48 concert is even half as exciting as this one was, you will not be disappointed.
