Admiring Japanese idols for a long time and to make her dream of becoming one true, Amina du Jean, or “Aminyan” came to Japan from America, Detroit City. Some of you may have seen her showing up in the TV program “You Wa Nanishini Nippon e” in mid-February on TV Tokyo. Since living in America, she has increased the number of Japanese fans through Niconama (live streaming service) and Twitter. We have interviewed Aminyan, who is currently attending a university in Japan and is aiming to become an idol. (She answered all the questions in Japanese).
日本のアイドルに憧れ、日本でアイドルになるためにアメリカ・デトロイトから来日した、愛美奈・デュジャンさんこと“あみにゃん”。２月中旬にテレビ東京の“YOUは何しに日本へ”で取り上げられ、観たという方もいるのではないでしょうか？ アメリカにいる頃から、ニコ生やTwitterを通して、既に日本のファンが付いているあみにゃん。現在は大学に通いながらアイドルを目指すあみにゃんに、インタビューしました！（全て日本語で答えてくれました）
-Firstly, why did you think of becoming an idol?
−まず、アイドルになりたいと思ったきっかけを教えてください。
Since about 15 years old, I have been reading a magazine for teenagers in my Japanese class in America. In one of the magazines, I found AKB48, and that was how I got to know them for the first time. I was interested in Japanese culture from about 8 years old, but I didn’t know much about idols…umm, I really love idols after knowing about AKB48. You know, idol is cute, pure, and positive…I would like to give hope to people, and I also want people to be positive. So I want to be an idol.
私は、15歳の時くらいから、アメリカの日本語クラスの中で子供の雑誌を読んでいました。その雑誌の中でAKB48が出ましたから、その時AKB48を知りました8歳の時くらいから私は日本の文化が興味ありましたけど、アイドルあんまり分からなかったから、えっと…AKB48を知ってからアイドルが大好きでした。アイドルはピュアで可愛くてポジティブだし…私はみんなに希望をあげたいし、ポジティブになってほしいから、アイドルになりたいです。
-So after that, what kind of things did you see in order to know more about idols?
−その後はどういうものを見てアイドルをもっと知るようになったのですか？
Umm, I looked through the internet a lot and knew more about them. Like Morning Musume。, Dempagumi.inc, Moso Calibration, lyrical school… I really love many different idol groups.
うーん、ネットの中でいっぱいアイドルを知りました。モーニング娘。、でんぱ組.inc.、妄想キャリブレーション、lyrical school…だから私は色々なアイドルグループが大好きです。
-From AKB48 to lyrical school…you really know a wide range of idols! Do you have a group that you particularly like?
−AKB48から始まり、lyrical schoolまで、本当に多岐に渡りますね！その中でも一番好きなグループはありますか？
I really love idols, but there are many groups that I am not able to check because I have school. But, I think my favorite group right now is lyrical school.
アイドルを愛していますけど、今は学校もありますから、チェック出来ていないグループがたくさんあります。でも、大好きなグループはlyrical schoolかもしれません。
-What do you like about lyrical school?
−lyrical schoolの好きなところはどこですか？
I like them because they seem to resemble the old school hip-hop.
オールドスクールのヒップホップっぽいですから大好きです。
-Have you actually seen them?
−実際に見たことはありますか？
I have never attended their live. I really want to go though. I want to go to a lot of idol festivals. Right now, there are a lot of unique idol groups in the world, so I really want to see them. I think I am a DD. “D”aredemo “D”aisuki “I love everyone”.
ライブに行ったことありません。ライブに本当に行きたいです。いっぱいアイドルフェスティバルに行きたい。今、世界中、いっぱいユニークなアイドルグループがありますから、本当に観てみたいです。私は、DDだと思います。誰でも大好き。
-I recognize you singing and dancing in Niconico douga, but what songs you are good at?
−歌って踊ることをニコニコ動画でやられていますが、得意な曲はありますか？
I often sing old songs, but umm…I love pop songs.
古い曲をよく歌いますけど、えっと…ポップな曲が大好きです。

-It’s been less than two months since you came to Japan right?
−日本に来て、二ヶ月も経ってないですよね？
Yes, I came to Japan at Oshogatsu (New Years’ Day).
はい。お正月に来ました。
-Coming to Japan for the first time, how is it?
−今回が初来日ということですが、実際の日本はどうですか？
I was born and raised in a small town in Michigan, so Tokyo is very exciting and I love it!
私の出身はミシガン州で、その中でも小さい町ですから、東京はエキサイティングで大好きです。
-Do you find anything different from the image you had about Japan before coming here?
−来日前に思っていた日本のイメージと違ったことはありましたか？
I have been to a lot of cities. Tokyo is different from Paris, New York, LA, or Rome, but I researched a lot about Japan so I wasn’t that shocked. But, I might be shocked if I go to the other towns, because I still only know about Tokyo.
私は、色々な大きなシティに行ったことありました。東京はパリとかNYとかLAとかローマとは少し違いますけど、日本のことはたくさんリサーチしましたから、大きなショックはないです。でも、日本の普通の町に行ったら、もっとショックかもしれません。まだ東京だけしか知らないから。
-I see. How is the food in Japan?
−なるほど。日本の食べ物はどうですか？
I love food. I am conservative about food, and I want to eat the same thing everyday, but I want the experience new things in Japan. So I will try anything new. It’s good.
私は食べ物が好きです。私は少し固い人ですから、毎日少し同じ物食べたいですけど、日本では新しい経験が欲しいです。だから全部食べてみます。おいしいです。
-Where do you buy your clothes?
−ちなみに服はどこで買うのですか？
When I was in America, I bought them through the internet. I love the clothes in Japan, so when I first came here, I went to buy the fukubukuro (mystery package) in Shibuya 109 with my mom. So I have a lot of clothes, but the recent ones, I bought them through the internet.
私は、アメリカにいるときはネットで日本の服買いました。日本の服が好きだから初めて日本に来た時、お母さんと一緒に渋谷１０９で福袋を買いました。だからいっぱい服がありますけど、最近、ネットから日本の服買いました。
-Don’t you go to Shibuya 109 anymore?
−渋谷109にはもう行かないんですか？
It’s a little bit expensive. I love the internet because it has old-clothes.
少し高いかも。ネットは古着ありますから大好きです。
-Do you have a brand that you like?
−好きなブランドはありますか？
LIZ LISA. I like girly brands.
リズリサ。女の子らしいブランドが大好きです。
-Coming to Japan to become an idol is striking. You come to look for something that is only in Japan. It seems similar to going to Japan to attend to an idol’s live that you can only see in Japan.
−アイドルになるために日本に来るってすごいですよね。日本にしかないものを求めてやってくる。日本でしか見れないアイドルのライブがあるから日本に行く感覚と同じですよね。
I understand, going to a live in Japan was very fun. There were different kinds of people, and I was also able to meet my fans too!
わかります、日本のライブすごい楽しかった。すごい色々な人、私のファンさんともリアルで会いましたから。
-Does that mean you knew your fans through the internet?
−ファンの方とは元々インターネットでは知り合いだったってことですか？
Yes. It was the first time to meet my fans, so I was really surprised, and also happy!
はい。初めてファンに会いましたから、すごいびっくりしました。嬉しかった！
-There were people from far away who came to your live in Akihabara right?
−その秋葉原でのライブには、遠くの方から来てくれた方もいたそうですね？
Yes, they were very kind. There were people from Fukuoka and Nagano. I received very nice letters too.
はい、優しかった。福島から長野から来ました。優しい手紙ももらいました。
-There weren’t those kinds of fans in America?
−アメリカではそういうファンの人はいませんでしたか？
I had fans in America, but idol culture is not popular in America, so it’s very different.
アメリカでファンはいましたけど、アメリカはアイドル文化があんまりありませんから、すごく違います。
-Have you ever received letters from your fans in America?
−アメリカのファンからお手紙をもらったことはないのですか？
No, I never received any letters in America. The idol fans in America are anime fans and are a like an otaku, and they are very shy that they don’t do otagei (dancing and yelling at idol concerts).
はい、アメリカでは全然お手紙はないです（笑）。アメリカのアイドルファンは、アニメファンで、少しオタクっぽいですから、みんなシャイでヲタ芸もやらないです。みんなビデオは撮っていますけど、ヲタ芸はないです。でも日本のファンはすっごく元気です。びっくりした！
-I see, the people of America don’t do Otagei.
−アメリカの人はヲタ芸やらないんですね。
They can’t because it’s embarrassing. I think they don’t even know how to do it. But the Idol Festival is coming up soon in America, and people to otagei there. But usual idol otakus in America don’t really know how to do it.
恥ずかしくてあんまり出来ない。多分やり方も知らないです。でももうすぐアメリカはアイドルフェスティバルありますから、そこではみなさんヲタ芸しています。でも普通のアメリカのオタクはアイドルあんまり知らないです。
-It seems like there is a stronger image of anime when you say “otaku” in America. What kind of idol do you want to be?
−やっぱり、アメリカでオタクと言えば、アニメの方が定着しているんですかねぇ。あみにゃんはどんなアイドルになりたいですか？
That’s difficult. I want to send my song and dance. But I also want to be an energetic and positive idol.
難しいです。歌とダンスを届けたいです。でも元気なポジティブなアイドルになりたいです。

-In the future, do you want to work as a group or solo?
−将来は、グループとソロ、どちらで活動していきたいですか？
I want to enter a group, but I also want to try solo, so whichever is fine. I want to be an idol! and there are positive sides to both working as a group and working as a solo.
グループ入りたいですけど、ソロもやりたいですから、どっちでもいいです。アイドルになりたいですから！ グループにはポジティブがあります。でも、ソロも別のポジティブがあります。
-It’s only been two months since you arrived to Japan, but is there something you find difficult in your life here? For example, there are many stations that don’t have the descriptions in English, but are you doing alright? Can you read kanji?
−まだ日本に来て二ヶ月ですが、何か生活で困っていることとかはないですか？ 例えば、日本の駅などの説明には英語が書いていないことも多いと思うのですが、大丈夫ですか？ 漢字は読めますか？
Yes, I can read a little bit. It’s difficult, but I also have the application in my phone. But sometimes, I say “please help me” to the staff in the station. Everyone is very kind.
はい、読める。少し難しいですけど、携帯のアプリがありますから。時々私は、駅のスタッフに「助けてください」と言う。みなさん優しい。
-Can you read the Japanese comments on Niconico douga?
−ニコニコ動画の日本語のコメントも読めるのですか？
Yes. But sometimes, there are words I don’t understand, so I look it up in the dictionary. But I do Niconama, so I will practice more Japanese. When I started Niconama, I couldn’t speak Japanese, but now I am becoming fluent. But I want to master Japanese so I will try harder.
はい。時々分からないから、辞書で調べる。でもニコ生するから、もっと日本語練習します。ニコ生始めた時、私は日本語喋らなかったけど、私は今少しペラペラになりました。でも完璧になりたいからもっと頑張ります。
-How much have you studied Japanese?
−日本語はどのくらい勉強したんですか？
I took a private Japanese class when I was 11 years old. I also took a Japanese class in high school, but I forgot most of it because I speak English with my friends. So, I studied by Niconama.
11歳でプライベートクラスで日本語を取った。高校も日本語クラス取ったけど、みんなと英語で喋るから忘れちゃった。だからニコ生で勉強しました。
-The internet is amazing! What triggered you to start the Niconama?
−インターネットってすごいですね！ そもそも、ニコ生をやるようになったきっかけは何ですか？
There was an Idol master boom at that time, and it was also very popular in Niconico douga. I love Idol master, and I was also interested in Niconico douga from before, so yeah.
その頃アイドルマスターブームがありましたから、ニコニコ動画でアイドルマスターが人気でした。私はアイドルマスターが大好きでニコニコ動画も興味がありましたから、うん。
-The idol fans in Japan don’t actually copy the dance. But idol fans abroad, like Ami-nyan, actually dance to it and spread them. Is there a reason to that?
−日本のアイドルのファンの方たちは、実際に真似して踊ったり、というのはそんなに多くないかも。でも海外のアイドルファンって、あみにゃんもそうだけど、実際に踊って、積極的に発信してくれるよね。何か理由はあるの？
Half of the idol fans in America are girls, and the girls dance to it and use the YouTube. Sometimes in Niconico douga, the idol fans upload themselves dancing to the songs of anime or vocaloid. But boys don’t really do that
アメリカでアイドルファンは半分女の子で、女の子は踊って、YouTube使う。時々ニコニコ動画でも、アイドルファンがボーカロイドやアニメソング踊ってアップします。でも男の人はあんまりしないです。
-I heard Aminyan’s debut single was collabo work with Yuuya Masada who’s producing music in Detroit. It’s like 8bit and Cheptune right? Is there something you participated for the production of the single?
あみにゃんのデビューシングルは、デトロイトで音楽制作をされているYuuya Masadaさんという方と共同制作されたそうですね。8bit、チップチューンみたいな感じなんですよね。あみにゃんが制作に関わった部分はどんなところですか？
I came up with the title. I really wanted to become an idol, so I tried to compose many songs when I was 15, but it was very hard. At that time, I was working as a maid at a maid café, and Yuuya Masada san was the customer. He had a Chiptune label, so I decided to do collaboration with him.
私はタイトル考えました。私はアイドルになりたかったから、１５歳くらいの時、いっぱい曲考えましたけど難しかった。その時私はアメリカ、デトロイトのメイドカフェのメイドでYuuya Masadaさんはお客さんでした。Yuuya Masadaさんはネットのチップチューンレーベルがありましたから一緒にコラボレーションしました。
-I heard you were the number one maid in Detroit.
−あみにゃんはデトロイトでナンバーワンのメイドだったそうですね！
Yes, that’s why I went on the Japanese TV Program “Sunday Japon” three years ago. I also appeared on Detroit News.
はい、だから三年前にサンデージャポンというテレビにも出ました。デトロイトニュースにも出ました。
