Juice = Juice is a Hello! Project group that debuted in 2013. Five members were selected from a pool of Hello Project understudies to begin their own activities. Yuka Miyazaki (21), Tomoko Kanazawa (19), Sayuki Takagi (18), Karin Miyamoto (16), and Akari Uemura (16) formed the group Juice = Juice, which was named after the desire to always be fresh and original group, like freshly squeezed juice. They released their 6th single, “Wonderful World /Ça va ? Ça va ?” on April 8, 2015, which placed #1 on the Oricon Weekly Singles Ranking chart. Since their debut two years ago, it was their first time to top the charts. With their #1 success, and anticipation of their future activities, we sat down to interview the girls!

Contributor Wanted!!

-Congratulations on being #1 on the Oricon Weekly Chart. What was your reaction when you heard you had placed #1?

Miyazaki: I heard the news before our staff and any of the other members, but I could hardly believe it at first. Before hearing anything, when they called my name, I thought I had done something wrong. (laugh)

Kanazawa: Everyone was planning on pulling a surprise prank on Yuka, and then we got a text from our manager saying, “We have an important announcement about Yuka Miyazaki.” I was like, “What could it be?” After that they sent us a video. We couldn’t help it; we were already laughing a little.

Miyazaki: They were actually going to do something much more harsh.

img-juicejuice-interview-10

Kanazawa: And then it was about placing #1 on the Oricon Weekly. She was completely surprised, and a little upset at our surprise prank, but she had a happy expression on her face, so she was completely happy.

Takagi: When I first saw the mail, I really thought Yuka was quitting. There was nothing about placing #1 in the title, so when I heard I was like, “Oh! It was only that!” I was really glad.

Miyamoto: I was totally convinced Yuka had done something, and I was really worried. I didn’t notice she was grinning. When I heard, I threw my phone in happiness.

Uemura: I didn’t notice the text until way later. Yuka had a really serious look on her face, so I was like, “What’s going on!” but I was completely thrilled that we had unexpected news that we had placed #1 on the weekly chart.

Miyazaki: Of course we thanked the Juice = Juice family, and we were all really overjoyed by the news, but we felt we were just really lucky so we talked about it together, and feel that we we’re much more united that we can still aim to go even higher.

-Well then, what kind of song is the one that placed #1, “Wonderful World”?

Kanazawa: We have a lot of cool and mature songs, but it’s really cheery; I think it’s probably out most cheerful song yet. The lyrics are optimistic, about paying attention to all the small, happy things everyday.

img-juicejuice-interview-04

Miyazaki: I totally liked it from the moment I heard it, and was really hoping to sing on it, so I was really happy!  I think we were able to show something different even on the MV.

-What about the dance?

Kanazawa: I think it’s something new, where the movements are big based on those of theme park dancers, and they really shine. We were kind of acting while we were moving, so it’s like seeing a Juice=Juice in a new way, and I think that part is worth paying attention to.

Takagi: There’s a part during the bridge where we’re making poses that represent everyday in time with the lyrics as we’re spinning around, and it was really difficult to keep inside the circle while keeping in time, and it took quite a bit of work.

-I noticed during the live video, there’s a part where Sayuki is singing the verse, and Akari and Karin exchange looks behind her, right? And during that part Akari is really laughing.

Uemura: It was a smiling part to begin with, so onstage we tried to change our expressions and create a situation where we were both laughing.

img-juicejuice-interview-06

Miyazaki: We wanted to put on bright smiles that would everyone’s heart skip so we were focusing on that while we were dancing like theme park dancers.

-And the movements?

Everyone: Yoshiko taught us!

-Could you tell me about the other song, “Ça va ? Ça va ?”?

Miyamoto: The title is French, and the melody has a French pop motif going on. It also includes a retro-style dance. On the verse, we’re each acting out our own parts, and it looks like I’m jealous of Sayuki and Tomoko being all lovey-dovey, and there’s a lot of little stories like that in it, but when it gets to the chorus we have to keep our hands at the same height together with the beat, and it’s different style we’ve done before in Juice=Juice, and I think it’s a song we couldn’t have done without coming this far together.

-Are you saying something at the end?

Miyamoto: I’m saying, “Je t’aime bien,” which is “I love you.” It’s something I often hear at our handshake events, and it makes me feel embrassed, but I’ll do my best to make your heart skip when I say it!

img-juicejuice-interview-05

-What about when you first learned the title?

Miyasaki: I couldn’t read it, and was like, “Kaba Kaba”?

Takagi: I heard it as “saba saba”, so I thought it was a song about a person being straightforward. And so I thought it was cool or mature style song, but when I listened to it, it had a sound I don’t believe Hello! Project has ever had before, and I thought it was intriguing and think it’s a song you start to love after listening to it over and over.

-Since you’re all under the spotlight in the MV, I thought this dance’s theme was more like a musical.

Takagi: I was told to image a puppet in the box.

Kanazawa: And talking with everyone, there are some part to dance with deliberately expressionless, I want you to also look at that part.

img-juicejuice-interview-08

-The line dance during the break is also neat.

Uemura: There are times when I really can’t lift my leg! So I’m really keeping up with my stretching.

Miyamoto: Just the other day, they suddenly told her to lift her leg!

Uemura: I had to call for a helper.

Takagi: I think the break is where we really show off our dancing individually, so I’d like everyone to watch each of us!

-By the way, I think everyone’s singing has gotten really good, so how did you all get so good?

Miyazaki: When I was doing musicals, it was different than what we normally do in Juice=Juice, and I was taught how to make my voice carry, and from then on people would tell me my style of singing had changed.

Uemura: He’s really good at giving examples. When he tells me something I’ll think, “What does he mean?” but like when he says, “Your unevenness is showing,” or he’ll like, tilt the keyboard and say, “This is you right now.” Then he’ll tilt it back straight and say, “Do it straight like this.”

Kanazawa: It’s so easy to understand! Even a baby could get it!!

Uemura: Even I have to say that he’s a genius at teaching.

Miyamoto: I read a lot of books on vocal training, but I couldn’t quite get their meaning. He taught me one-on-one about how to position my chin or my hands, in a way that was easy to understand. I think it’s amazing how he’s able to explain things in a way each person understands.

Takagi: He’s great at experimenting, like what happens or not if you do this, and it’s easy to see.

img-juicejuice-interview-07

-When you reached #1, up until the release I heard a crucial discussion took place between the members. What did you talk about then?

Kanazawa: A lot of changes happened with Hello! Project, and the number of junior members increased, and there was talk about how Juice=Juice couldn’t only be fresh, and we also talked about how we needed to change the general attitude of it. They increased our number of lessons. We had never been able to discuss any of the songs, but we came up with this and that, and were advised to talk it over with Mr. Sugui. I think it really felt more like something the 5 of us had made together more than anything else previously.

Takagi: After our talk, a lot of people told us more things like, “Juice=Juice’s level really went up!” or, “You guys got really good!” more often and we were really happy.

-So from that critical talk you all became more united.

Miyazaki: Today we went karaoke, too!

Kanazawa: It was the first time the 5 of us had gone together!

Miyazaki: We pretty much gets along backstage, though! It’s weird how excited we all get!

Takagi: During the discussion we didn’t say much, and we were all on edge, but since we’ve gotten through it, recently we’ve been having a really good time!

Uemura: Before when we were backstage the manager got upset at us and told us “Be quiet!” so many times.

img-juicejuice-interview-02

-Could you tell me what Western artists you often listen to?

Takagi: I’m really into blues recently. Like Stevie Ray Vaughan. Also Tsunku♂ recommended Norah Jones to me.

Miyamoto: For female artists, Ariana Grande. Recently, New Kids on the Block. They’ve got an album called SIX, and they sound like a completely than their Step By Step period, and I’ve been interested in listening to how the group has progressed.

Uemura: While I was an understudy, Christina Aguilera was a huge hit, but my mom really likes Western music, and she has her own CDs. Eminem, the rapper, had a huge influence on her.

-Eminem!

Kanazawa: I really like Katy Perry and listen to her a lot. Mr. Sugui showed me a lot of songs by Madonna and Britney Spears. He told me to not only study the ones where they take a lot of breaths and sing in a whisper-like style, but ones with a lot of soul where they sing in a sexier style. Also others like Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift. Recently I’ve been into Miranda Cosgrove.

-You listen to quite a lot.

Kanazawa: I love Western music!

-What countries do you want to visit, or perform in?

Uemura: France! I want real French people to hear our new song “Ca va? Ca va?” and get their feedback at a handshake event.

-Juice=Juice is really popular in France, and at DJ events after JAPAN EXPO, they were playing your songs one after another.

Everyone: What!

Uemura: That’s fantastic!!

Miyamoto: I love musicals, so I’d like to go to New York and see a real musical.

Takagi: I would say London. Tomoyasu Hotei, who I love, is living there right now, and his blog is full of great sights and has really influenced me.

Kanazawa: I love Audrey Hepburn so much I have a lot of posters of her hung up at home, so I’d like to visit the world of Roman Holiday. They say Rome wasn’t built in a day, so I’d like to stay not only one day, but for a long time.

Miyazaki: I’d like to visit an island somewhere.

img-juicejuice-interview-09

-An island?!

Miyazaki: While I was looking up pretty islands, I found Maldives. It was really pretty! I want to sing “Wonderful World” and other cheerful songs there. With our fans, together!

img-juicejuice-interview-03

-A fan club tour there instead of Hawaii would be amazing.

Takagi: It would be fun!

-I’d like to ask all of you members to introduce another member’s charm point.

Kanazawa: Yuka had this really airy, girlish demeanor, but since she became the leader she’s been handling everything really well, and we really understand her feelings about drawing out everyone’s best. But because she used to be so airy and girlish, she makes us feel like we’re leaders supporting her instead. (laugh) On top of that I think she’s a hard worker, and backstage when there’s something that’s not good enough, she’ll make a peace sign and we’ll often see her practicing on her own, so her presence makes us feel like doing our best, too!

Takagi: Tomo picks up everything quickly. And she’s always the one doing the most preparation or confirming everything the next day. She has a lot of other good points, too, but she’s like an old man. She looks cool and mature, but she’s the loudest. Even backstage she’s always doing something really wild. (laugh) But I think that’s a good thing, too, so I hope I have the chance to keep putting up with her for a long time.

Miyamoto: I’ve known her for a long time since Hello Pro Egg, and Sayuki is very honest and straightforward. Out of all the members she’s the one that can really turn everyone’s mood around. If Sayuki wasn’t here, I think there’d be a lot less pulling us along. And it’s somewhat different from doing everything perfectly, even though it seems like she isn’t paying attention to anyone around her, really she’s doing her own thing and thinking of everyone else, too.

Takagi: She’s amazing, isn’t she. (laughs)

img-juicejuice-interview-01

-Is there a part of her you’d like to copy?

Miyamoto: Yes! How outgoing she is!! I can’t text the juniors or anything at all. I get too nervous…

Uemura: I really like Rinka’s (Karin’s) serious expression. Like on stage she’ll be sitting like you do in gym class and studying the choreography, like really watching our dance teacher. It makes me think, “She’s really trying hard.”

Kanazawa: That’s condescending!

Uemura: I don’t mean it like that! Rinka’s the kind of person that can show you how to do something perfectly. She doesn’t show all of the effort she puts in behind the scenes, so when you catch a glimpse of her like that, you go, “Oh!” like this is how she can do it so perfectly.

-So she’s got it down from the very beginning.

Uemura: During our first dance rehearsal, I always learn something from her. Just before during our solo concert, I learned what I had been doing wrong during dance for “Watashi ga Iu Mae ni Dakishimenakya”.

-That’s 2 years!

Uemura: It took quite awhile.

-Okay, so last, let’s have our leader introduce something about Uemura.

Miyazaki: Akari is really straightforward. She’s always straightforward with her emotions, so we know when she’s in a bad mood, or when she’s having fun. Because she’s never faking it, it’s really fun when she’s here. She’s a genius, too! When Akari says what’s on her mind, it always becomes the point of the our talks and makes me think, “Wow~.” She’s really beautiful when you look at her, but she’s childish on the inside and not stuck-up, and I think that’s really admirable.

img-juicejuice-interview-13

-What’s so appealing about Juice=Juice’s concerts?
-Juice=Juice

Takagi: Between the first day of our concert tour and now, I think our songs and dances and everything, along with our singing style have gradually become different, and think it’s worth seeing how we’ve matured, and hope that you’ll come and enjoy seeing us several times.

-I completely agree, and really get the impression that you keep maturing every day.
Finally, I’d like each of you to tell all of your overseas fans about Juice=Juice’s appeal and what kind of group you’d like to be.

Uemura: Starting with the English on our tests, I want to be able to speak English and French, too. It would be great if we were an idol group featured all over the world.

Miyamoto: Juice=Juice is English, and like with the title of our song “Ca va? Ca va?” too, there’s words from around the world, and even with our music there’s Latin-style and tango and so on, so it would make me happy if people overseas are thinking, “Hey, isn’t this our country’s music?” And also we’ve got a lot of songs in our repertory that I hope makes you feel refreshed, and I want to keep doing my best in hopes that you find Juice Juice’s music, and it’s future variations, appealing.
Ça va ?

Takagi: I’m terrible at English, but even without understanding the words, I think music itself is amazing! We all hear the same sounds, and can feel the same things from it, so I feel we should do whatever it takes to let ourselves be heard through it. I think we have a lot of songs, but I feel we should do our best to improve our skills so we can reach everyone one by one like that!

Kanazawa: Hello! Project’s MVs are available on the net and those overseas can view them, and there’s also English translations included, so I think everyone can understand what we’re saying, but Juice=Juice has a lot of mature songs, so it’d make me glad if people overseas could understand the subtle differences in maturity between them. Also, like our name, Juice=Juice, I want us to keep on being fresh, and focus on being the freshest unit out there!

Yuka: In Juice=Juice, we often do cheers, or kampai, when we’re celebrating something, so I think when we go abroad it would be great if we could say cheers in each country’s language, so I want to create a lot of things worth celebrating so we can say cheers in each country’s language.
