– I see. Then, when a job comes from an artist that you have never worked with before, what is the first thing that you do?
なるほど。では、初めてかかわるアーティストの仕事が来たら、まずスミスさんは何をしますか。
I look them up on Wikipedia.

– (Laughs) Do you also reference their previous promotion videos?
– （笑）。アーティストの過去のPVを参考にしたりもしますか。
I watch the videos and think “why did they come to me?”, or “what is it that they want me to expand on or strengthen?” Honestly, if they just want someone to film something beautifully, I`m not the person to ask as far as that kind of job is concerned. After I`m finished watching the videos, I’ll listen to the song and think about my first impression of it. If an idea doesn’t come to me when I`m listening to the song the first time, it’ll be like a difficult childbirth after. It doesn’t matter whether it`s a good song or a bad song. Even when I think “this is a good song!” there are times when the ideas don`t come as well.
まあ見ますね。なぜ自分に話が来たのかなって思うし、何を伸ばしてほしいのかを知りたいなと思っていて。正直、ただ美しく撮ってくれっていうものの話は僕には来ない訳ですよ。仕事として。あとはとにかく曲を聞いて、第一印象から考えていく。曲を一回目に聞いたときに、アイデアが出なかったら、あとはもう難産ですよ。ただそれは良い曲だとか悪い曲だとかはあんまり関係がなくて。良い曲だなあ!と思っても思いつかないときもあるし。
– I see. There are a few of your videos that I would like to focus on now, namely Dempagumi.inc’s (referred to as Dempagumi from now on) “Fancy Hoppe ♡ U-Fu-Fu” and “Not Bocchi…Natsu” because in these videos, the members have a lot of charm but it co-exists with music that can properly heard, so I felt that naturally, these were good examples of how the video promotes the song. What kind of techniques do you have to make sure that such a video does not end up giving the impression of being all mixed-up?
– なるほど。ではいくつか作品に焦点を当ててお伺いしたいのですが、でんぱ組.inc（以下、でんぱ組）の『ファンシーほっぺ♡ウ・フ・フ』や『ノットボッチ…夏』では彼女たちの持つたくさんの魅力が全部共存してるのに音楽もちゃんと聴こえてきて、まさに楽曲の宣伝になっているなと感じたのですが、ごちゃごちゃした印象を与えないようにする工夫って何かあったりしますか。
Let’s see…rather than a technique, these girls are definitely singing in a particular way and have a mood to their songs, so I want to come as close as possible to capturing it. If I was just thinking of efficiency, wouldn’t it be best to just use the same scenes over and over again? But, if I did that, I’d get bored with it. Which is why, I want to film as many scenes as possible so I don’t have to use the same scene more than once. If people say that there’s a sense of unity within my videos, it’s probably because I make a unified world view and then let the characters play around within it.
そうですね…工夫というか、この子はここをきっとこういう風に歌っているんだろうなあっていう雰囲気が歌にあるから、なるべくそれに近づけたいなというのはあります。あとはそもそもPV自体の撮り方としては、効率だけで考えると、同じ画を何回も使えるように撮った方が良い訳ですよね。でもそれをやると、僕が飽きちゃうんです。だから、なるべくもう一回しか使わないような画をいっぱい撮りたいんですよ。あとはまあ一個世界観を作って、その中からはみ出ないところでキャラクターを遊ばせてるので、統一感が出ているというなら、そういうところかもしれませんね。
– To that effect, the video for “Not Bocchi…Natsu” has a lot of information in it doesn’t it?
– それこそ『ノットボッチ…夏』のPVもいろいろな情報が入っていますね。
That’s because it’s in the name of SumiNemu (Smith and Yumemi Nemu) isn’t it? Nemu-chan knows all about the other members completely so it’s important to use it isn’t it?
あれはスミネム名義ですからね。（夢眠）ねむちゃんがメンバーのことを知り尽くしているので、それを有効活用しつつっていうのが大きいですね。
—So how did you proceed with planning?
企画作業はどのように進めたのですか。
In the case of SumiNemu, Nemu-chan would tell me all the things that she likes and I would pick out the ideas I could use to move forward. After that it was on to the outfits and hairstyles, which I left up to Nemu-chan.
スミネムの場合はねむちゃんに好きなこと言ってもらって、その中から使えそうなアイデアだけを抜き出して進めるっていうのがだいたいですね。あとは衣裳のこととか、髪型のこととかはもうねむちゃんにおまかせです。
– Were there any ideas that came out of the SumiNemu collaboration that made you think “If it wasn’t the two of us, I would have never thought of that!”?
– スミネムで、「二人でやっていなかったら思いつかなかったな」というアイデアなどありますか。
There were a lot of those! Well I’ve only used about 3 books full of them so far (laughs). For example, in “Not Bocchi…Natsu”, Eitaso’s (Naruse Eimi) rap scene, each character that appeared on the screen was something that Nemu-chan thought up all by herself. But it was something that I clearly didn’t understand at all (laughs). I totally didn’t get it.
それはもうたくさんありますよ。まあまだ３本しか作ってないですが（笑）。例えば『ノットボッチ…夏』では、えいたそ（成瀬瑛美）のラップシーンのそれぞれのキャラクターは全てねむちゃんに考えてもらっています。でもはっきり言って僕には意味が分かんないんですよね（笑）。全体的に意味が分かってないです。
– But, it ended up where you were like “Let’s do it that way!” didn’t it?
– でも、それでいこう！ってなったんですね。
I was pretty much like, “Yeah, why not?”.
もう、いいんじゃない、って。
– I see (Laughs). Next, I would like to ask you about the video you directed for Team Shachihoko`s major label debut single “Shuto Iten Keikaku”. From the first shot were you particularly effected by any one particular thought?
– なるほど（笑）。ではチームしゃちほこ（以下、しゃちほこ）の作品に関するお話も聞きたいのですが、最初にメジャーデビューシングル『首都移転計画』のPVを演出されていましたね。その一発目に関われるというのはやはり特別な思いはありましたか。
I like making videos for people who are making their debut the best. It would be perfect to make a few videos starting from their debut.
僕はデビューをする人をやるのが一番好きなんですよ。デビューから、何作かやるのが一番良いです。
