Asakusa

Asakusa (浅草) is a district in central Tokyo that is known as one of Tokyo’s “shita-machi”(old town). For many centuries, Asakusa used to be Tokyo’s leading entertainment district since the pleasure quarters and playhouses of the Edo period and the area is popular tourist spot where you can feel the atmosphere of the Tokyo of past decades survives. Asakusa’s main attraction is Sensoji, Tokyo’s oldest temple and most tourists have commemorative photographs taken in front of Sensoji’s main gate “Kaminari-mon”(雷門). Around 90 stores line the 250-meter street called “Nakamise-dori” from the Kaminari-mon to the Hozo-mon gate of Sensoji offering souvenirs from Japan’s past.
