During the mid 90s to early 2000s, with the huge popularity of Ayumi Hamasaki, Namie Amuro and Kumi Koda as a trigger, dying hair to light brown and/or blonde was also popular amongst Japanese teenagers. And as that popularity has been stable for a very long time, dying your hair to light brown changed to common fashion for young females in Japan.

But within this couple of years, many actresses, models, and idols who used to have light, brown hair, turned it back to black. Nozomi Sasaki, Maria Nishiuchi, Reina Triendl, and Tomomi Itano are some of the names that has changed in to black hair and uploaded selfies on their Instagram or Blog sites which received huge attention.

And it seems as though this black hair boom amongst Japanese young females is paralleling with the rising popularity of the idol groups in Japan. AKB48, Nogizaka46, or Momoiro Clover Z are just couple of the Japanese female idol groups that have become popular after 2010, and most of the members or all of the members have natural black hair.

Big name like Perfume, who has been highly recognized for their performances oversea, has kept their trademark of their hairstyle for their entire career, which also representing it as Japanese female beauty black hair.

With the popular actresses, models, and idols reversing their hair color to black, there have been many young females who also color it back to black or grow out the natural black hair. But still, there are much more young females who have their hair dyed in to light brown. This is said that it is one part of the process for young females to have a “campus debut,” when they are broken free from high-school with strict restrictions and debut with a new look for college. It has also said to be that this is part of a process to blend in within the new environment and not to stand out too much. And for them, black hair seems juvenile, and brown hair looks more mature and refined as new look.

But black hair is now making a comeback at its naturalness and purity for Japanese people. Many of the Internet polls tell that men like females with black hair, because of its natural beauty, and the popularity of contemporary idol groups have accelerated that fondness.

What do you guys think? What is your favorite hair color?
