On January 8 2018, young adults all over Japan celebrated one of their most important milestones as they officially became recognized as legal adults in Japanese society. It’s a momentous occasion each year, with females sweeping into the streets dressed in elegantly lavish furisode and the males stepping out in dapper suits.
Plenty of popular idols, models and actresses also commemorated their Coming-of-Age this year, and it’s been a treat for fans to see their celebratory photos and thoughtful updates as they too become adults. For some, it might even be nostalgic to think about the girls they’ve watched grow up since their debut in the entertainment industry make a new kind of debut into adulthood.
For some, it becomes a highly publicized event—major groups like the 48 franchise and Nogizaka46 regularly hold a Coming-of-Age ceremony for their members who turned 20 each year. On the other hand, there are many others who are often too busy with their activities to attend their own ceremony in private. Morning Musume.’18’s Erina Ikuta earned the sympathy and respect of her fans when she missed her own ceremony for work, instead thanking the fans warmly for coming to meet her at her event that day.
Nevertheless, it’s a memorable occasion that marks a special milestone for each of these young ladies. Take a look at this year’s idols and talents who put on beautiful furisode as they came of age!
