Girls Licking Doorknobs Was a Thing in Japan?

Did you know that back in 2010, a series of photographs of young women licking doorknobs was a trend for a short time in Japan? It was even the subject of a amazon.co.jp exclusive photobook titled “Doorknob Girl” (ドアノブ少女, doanobu shoujo)!

The project was the result of a collaboration between manga artist/illustrator Ryuko Azuma and photographer Toumorukoshi. It seems that it was born out of the taboo of licking something as dirty as a doorknob, an object covered in bacteria and other microorganisms combined with the notion that strange trends in Japan are often difficult to understand. They definitely succeeded!

The photobook is long been out of print but there is still a tumblr page (last updated in 2014) and a Twitter online.
