Do you know about sofubi (a portmanteau of “soft” and “vinyl”, a “b” sound is used because the “v” sound is rare in Japanese), toy figures made out of PVC (polyvinyl chloride)? Sofubi is part of Japanese popular culture that dates as far back as the 1960’s. One up. Akihabara is the place where you can get sofubi culture condensed into its purest form. Although this might make it sound like the sort of place meant only for hardcore fans, it’s a place that’s fun for those who are just looking as well!

The first thing to catch our eye is the exterior showcase. There are many different kinds of figures neatly on display here, it’s as if we’ve come to a sofubi exhibition! If you look carefully, you may be surprised at the painstaking attention to detail. Even if you might know many of the characters, it is possible that the designs or craftsmanship may sway you into wanting to buy some.

Inside the shop are sofubi from independent designers as well as super rare and expensive ones. With so many items that can be found nowhere else in the world, fans come from far and wide to look for their “Holy Grail”.

If there is anything you want to look at, be sure to ask one of the shop clerks to assist you. Don’t hesitate to ask!
