It’s election season in Japan again and AKB48 has unveiled the preview MVs for the coupling songs from their 44th single “Tsubasa wa Iranai” (release date: June 1)!

The Team A song “Set Me Free” (Type-A, Type-B) takes place at a fashion show with the members doing their little turns on the catwalk. It’s like they’re models, if you know what we mean. It looks like Sakura Miyawaki is the center but she’s actually sharing it with Haruka Shimazaki, who is still not at full strength. Is the setting being at a fashion show a nod to 2015’s “Bokutachi wa Tatakawanai”?

Chia-Ling Ma makes her MV debut in Team B’s “Koi Suru to Baka wo Miru” (Type-A) where she joins the others in a magical sento (public bath). It feels like a missed opportunity that that refrain doesn’t use “chapu chapu” (Miyuki Watanabe’s made-up word for bathing) in it. As usual, it’s really cute and idol-y.

The Team K song “Aishuu no Trumpeter”(Type-C) is a spicy Latin dance tune full of colors, from the flowerbeds that the members are peeking through to sing, to their patterned purple dresses and carpet beneath them. Hopefully more of the scenes in front of the yellow wall will be shown in the full version?

Team 4 take the “video within a video” concept one step further in “Kangaeru Hito” (Type-B) as Nana Okada and Mako Kojima sit down and start opening up all the video files and arrange them on the desktop. Imagine what some creative fans could come up with if the raw materials were to be made available.

Team 8 take off running, showing off their athletic dominance once again in the marathon-themed MV for “Yume he no Route” (Type-C). Nanami Yamada (Hyogo) takes an early lead as the center member.

“Tsubasa wa Iranai” will be released in 3 limited editions and 3 regular versions. Type-A includes the Team A song “Set Me Free”, the Team B song “Koi Suru to Baka wo Miru”, the MVs for those songs (and “Tsubasa wa Iranai”) and a video titled “Nakanishi Chiyori Busu Series: Busu no Omoide”. Type-B includes the Team A song “Set Me Free”, the Team 4 song “Kangaeru Hito”, the MVs for those songs (and “Tsubasa wa Iranai”) and a yet untitled video. Type-C includes the Team K song “Aishuu no Trumpeter”, the Team 8 song “Yume he no Route” and the MVs for those songs (and “Tsubasa wa Iranai”). The theater version which is only available in the King Records online store, has NGT48’s “Kimi wa doko ni iru?” as its exclusive track.
